Citizen Unveils its New Eco-Drive Caliber 0100

Post by Racer-X » March 20th 2019, 2:22pm

“Citizen was founded in 1918 and to celebrate its 100th anniversary the Japanese manufacturer unveils 3 limited edition watches named after its new Caliber 0100. Based on Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology, this new movement delivers an impressive precision of +/- 1 second per year, making it the most accurate autonomous light-powered wristwatch. And while we don’t usually cover quartz watches on MONOCHROME, this new development is clearly pushing quartz into new territories.”

Ah, but the Citizen still works when radio timekeeping signals are out of range.

7 large for 1 second a year probably isn't totally outlandish as its main competitors are Citizen's own 5 second per year or the GS 9F series both of which are north of 2 large. If the Oysterquartz hadn't suffered a premature death it might be priced right alongside.

Not that I'll be buying one but it's impressive. And Citizen's Chronomaster has sometimes been a bitch to come by over here.
And the fact I'm still living rent free in his head makes me grin and giggle.

HAQ is indeed redundant but so is movement decoration that people pay extra for. Or finishing invisible to the naked eye or brand value. And tourbillons - especially tourbillons. Realistically the "point of diminishing returns" probably sits comfortably at the 15 seconds per month of a generic quartz or 20 seconds a day for a mechanical.

Perfect for those who can't be bothered to go through the strenuous task of adjusting their watch a few times a year. Or who would rather brag that they dropped big coin to buy a watch that they need to keep in a window or wear with short sleeves all the time.

I'll take the opposite take: I really dig the technology, and the styling is a home run where I live. Would I buy one at MSRP? Nope, but I'd wager that it's the rose gold and titanium that are making these so expensive out of the box. Citizen being Citizen, the movement and the technology behind it will eventually trickle down to more affordable models. As it stands? Wish I had more scratch - another watch I'd own and then call it a collection. The more I look at it, the better it looks - I'm getting the Grand Seiko vibe from this one.

People are well past it if this doesn't appeal. Incredible movement.

In as boring a design as I've seen in, well, ever.

Did I really just see a $16,800 Citizen watch?

See if you love Citizens this is total iconic Citizen. I am waiting for them to start marrying their cases to those Swiss movements they now control.
