Formex Essence - Affordable COSC Auto Chronometer

Post by Racer-X » August 27th 2018, 12:03pm

“When something sounds too good to be true it very often is, but there are those occasions when it’s worth taking a closer look. Formex, known for their rugged watches, is about to launch a mechanical timepiece, rich in details and features, with a decorated Automatic Swiss Made movement that is officially COSC-certified. With the Essence, Formex brings a highly precise and top quality mechanical everyday Chronometer with a very affordable price tag. Early Bird Specials are available now.”

The advertorials at Fratello never fail to entertain me. The copywriter doing a faux-review/faux-article must be laughing their arse off while writing an advert in that style.

As to the watch, I don't like it. The brand name, combined with that font, would be more fitting for a manufacturer of hammer drills and other construction equipment. The rest of the watch... I don't like it either. Perhaps it's not a bad deal for the money, but since it's not a good-looking one, it doesn't matter. Bleh.

Nothing wrong with that one - especially in the silver dial.

Formex COSC to be offered at Kickstarter

Post by koimaster » September 13th 2018, 2:17pm

Introducing the Formex Essence

A COSC certified chronometer for $680 – including worldwide shipping – we wouldn’t believe it was possible, but Formex are promising just that with their new watch. The Formex Essence is a 43mm watch that combines sport and dressy looks with two patented features: a suspension system and a quick adjustment on the butterfly clasp. The clasp adjustment looks good, and though the suspension system sounds a bit gimmicky it certainly looks the part.

I, uh, actually have to agree with you. I'm not interested, but it seems a decent product at a fair price. I dunno; the whole Startkicker thing always gives me pause. Maybe because I'm so old school that when I'm interested in something, I wanna see, feel, try it before I buy instead of investing first and then operating on a wing and a prayer.

I have bought two watches through kickstarter. Ther first one, I have bitterly regretted. The second one, I have not received yet (but at least they do send updates every other week about how far they have come, and it seems to be "in the final stage").

The only place I've ever seen Formex watches offered is through Ebay sellers. There was an ebay watch seller from Germany (McArthurs) I used to buy from but they closed down years ago. Never seen one in a store or the wild, can't remember ever seeing one posted here either.

Their calling card back in the day was auto sport with a “suspension” system. The case was split to allow it to move up and down. Neat. :D

I posted here somewhere about the one I own with that suspension system. As far as them not being seen here from what I understood back then was they were marketed for Europe or oversees, now they are being marketed as being online only so I doubt youll see one at a jewelry shop anytime soon.

As far as I know it will be the first time a COSC-movement from Sellita is used in a watch other than in a prototype. It is thus a kind of must-add to the collection for collectors interested in movements.

Love to see it in the flesh and have ordered one just to see what they are made of.
