The Naoya Hida & Co. NH Type 2A
I’m not sure if you are familiar with Naoya Hida & Co. It’s a new Japanese watch brand just launched in March 2019 — named after its founder, Mr. Naoya Hida. Mr. Hida is a well-known figure in the Japanese watchmaking community for his prominent roles in sales and marketing at several specialized distributors for Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, and Breguet, since 1990. He’s also been the Japanese representative for F.P. Journe and Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewelry. Mr. Hida founded his own watch brand in 2018 with the mission to create his ideal wristwatches in Japan, and launched his first production model, the NH Type 1B, just last year. The piece we have here is one of the two novelties for 2020.
The NH Type 2A is a hand-winding timepiece incorporating vintage-inspired design cues from the 1950s. However, the case size isn’t exactly following the standard of the era as the watch measures 37mm across and 10.7mm thick — a modern sizing while maintaining a relatively compact footprint. The case is made of 904L stainless steel. 904L steel is highly corrosion-resistant and extremely robust, which inevitably means the material is harder to machine, and only a few manufacturers such as Rolex utilize this steel for their case construction. The sharp lugs with pronounced edges and the large, easy-to-operate crown enhance the vintage aesthetics of the piece.
