Shanghai Stopwatch Factory "Gold Coin" watch for the blind arrives at the AMCHPR

Post by AlbertaTime » June 9th 2025, 1:10pm

Arrived today: an uncommon Shanghai Stopwatch Factory "Gold Coin" watch for the blind, with a hinged top so that the dial can be touched.

Although I don't buy watches near as often as I used to, I still keep an eye out for targets of opportunity. I found this on Ebay and I don't think the seller knew what it was because the listing had no photo of it open, and the price was only $25.

Note the hinged top to allow access to the dial for touch. I've included a photo of a well used piece to show the effect of touch over time.

I haven't been able to find any similar watches using Chinese on the dial 金钱/Jinqian (Gold Coin) from 上海秒表厂 (Shanghai Stopwatch Factory) but I've seen these on 7788 dot com and other sites, so Chinese folks bought them with the English name, although I think these may have also been intended for export.

That's fantastic and it is in stunning condition!
It *is* in spectacular shape. Lucky and cheap.

A seriously interesting piece!
I thought so, too. I've seen other similar "for the deaf" Chinese watches and always planned to get one for my collection, but when I saw this, in this shape, I pounced.

I had a friend in high school who had one of those. He got it from his grandfather passed who had also been blind. He eventually replaced it with a pop-up crystal watch with a brail dial. On occasion we'd catch a buzz and watch HBO, the only cable available here at the time, catch a Broncos game on Sunday, an occasional movie. One day he was crossing the street and a drunk barreled around a corner through a red light and killed him and his service dog. That was the first time I'd lost someone close. The first funeral I'd gone to. It was so alien then, somebody just gone. Routine now. So damn familiar now plus 60 years, the procession outta here. Funny the nostalgias this thing of ours can stir up every now and then.

another epic watchlords thread. Fantastic watch, stories and chuckles. Only thing missing is geek speak.
