AMCHPR 2024 China tour: Shanghai Watch Factory Museum

Post by AlbertaTime » November 2nd 2024, 10:03am

Continuing the past few days in my formal capacity as Chief Expert of the China Watch Overseas Working Committee (CWOWC) of the CHA, I was treated to a private guided tour of the newly open Shanghai Watch Factory Museum. A terrific translator was provided and I was taken through the well over 1200 displayed items, with an emphasis on all the most important pieces.

I was also advised that besides a plethora of rescued historical documents and related ephemera and the displayed items, the museum had a back collection of many more *thousands* of pieces.

My visit was described to me as a very high level meeting of collectors, and the first picture includes:

Mr. Guangtao, again referenced here; Mr. Sun (who I first met with Joel Chan in 2013 in Shanghai, referenced here and who was described to me as having China's most complete collection of military issued watches, including one of every year's issue of the famed 114 military watch); some old guy from Alberta; Mr. Li Wei, leader of the CHA Domestic Collections Committee, and Mr. Chen, Director of the Shanghai WF Museum, and a very top-level executive of Shanghai Watch Factory's e-commerce division.

The second photo is a copy of Mr. Li's Wechat post from yesterday, the translation of which describes one of the decisions reached at the closed door meeting that took place that day. I was advised by Mr. Li that the second piece of the first Shanghai Watch Factory Museum Series will be mine.

The next three photos are teasers of more information to come.
