Merkur crossline dark blue dial watch arrives at the AMCHPR

Post by AlbertaTime » April 3rd 2024, 5:36pm

Steel case, Merkur's Tongji style movement, 5 ATM WR (so OK to get wet but don't push it, is my reading), 38mm case, 20mm lugs, 45mm lug-to-lug, 12mm thick, and it has Merkur's K1 mineral crystal, which is as good a mineral crystal as I've ever seen with its light-handling and the acrylic-like rounding (and at least as good as Seiko usually provides for a couple of hundred bucks more), but I'd prefer sapphire.

Still, for $100USD, it might not be easy to come up with a nicer looking watch for slightly dressier social or office wear. The provided strap, seen here, is...OK...but I don't think it helps the watch at all, and with a better strap, I'm thinking this will look like a few more $$$ on my wrist than I paid.

And the caseback is pure coolness.

Is Merkur the Timex of China?
I don't think so. Brands like Merkur, Addiesdive, San Martin are actually not as big in China as they are here. Aliexpress and the brands usually seen there are for the western market--which the major legacy brands (with the exception of Peacock) almost entirely ignore.

Apart from the 1963, I doubt Sea-Gull, for example, moves near the numbers of watches in the west that, say, San Martin or Merkur or Addies, or similar brands are doing these days.

Thanks, AlbertaTime. That sounds like the Chinese restaurants in most of the U.S. They make food that Americans will eat, not necessarily true to the way it's made in China.
The wonderful thing is that both cuisines are delicious :-)
