USS Jimmy Carter {Seawolf class} surfacing in San Diego:

The Jimmy Carter was the third and largest/most capable of the Seawolf class boats. They were meant to be the follow on Cold War attack boats to the Los Angeles class boats.

Cost was no object but then Cold War ended and that changed, so Jimmy Carter was the last of the class constructed and the Navy, in a rare moment of DoD frugality, downshifted and designed the much cheaper Virginia class boats.

It is an incredible machine, likely the most formidable attack submarine ever constructed by anyone but a bit of a white elephant as sub force mission has changed post Cold War.

Excellent read on the founding and early days of the USN.
Thanks, looks like a good read.

Another one is White Jacket by Herman Melville, famously the author of Moby Dick. While in Hawaii in 1843, he joined the Navy as a Seaman and served aboard the USS United States for 14 months sailing from Hawaii to Boston and the book is a fictionalized account of his experiences.

I read this while I was in the Navy and in addition to being just a great read, I was amazed at how much the Navy was the same despite the passage of nearly 150 years.
