Ipoh, Malaysia

Post by jason_recliner » August 6th 2024, 8:11am

Just spent a day in Ipoh but wish we'd set aside two or three. It's the most photogenic - I think the youths say Grammable - town I've ever visited. So beautiful, so charming, it's like a movie set.

Not only does the town look incredible but I found some of the most delicious food of my life. If you're ever in Malaysia I highly recommend spending some time there.

This is our guesthouse:

Very basic room but authentic and charming, absolutely huge (at least twice as big as Hard Rock) and IMMACULATELY clean.

Huge bathroom with two showers, one rain, one waterfall, with pebble floors:

We stayed in Old Town, which is definitely the area to be in. The rest of the town is pretty daggy:

This country knows how to fry a chicken:

Second best pavlova I've ever had (after mum's) at a dessert bar run by a young guy with a superb young chef:

Early morning run along the Cinta River. Beautiful light - I'll come back one day with my camera, phone doesn't do it justice:

I'm such a badass I destroyed my sneakers on that run! They served me well - Kayano 18s, pretty sure they're up to 31 now, I might have bought them before I moved to Perth!

You might think it's not much to look at but Sarah and I agreed this is one of the best breakfasts we've ever had:

Ipoh is famous for biscuits and cakes and this is one of the best bakeries IMO:

That'd Purdy. Can't make your link work though.
What the fuck fucking Imgur is fucked. I'll post some pics like I did in the WURW thread. Should only take six or seven hours.

Can anybody recommend a good pic sharing site? A free one? I'm broke as fuck, turns out living like a Raj ain't exactly cheap ๐Ÿ˜”

Loved this!! Super shots of fascinating places.
Thanks Ron. Buildings over 100 years old are fairly rare in Australia, even more so in WA, so I couldn't get enough of them. You probably see a lot of old Chinese shops and courtyard homes when you go to China?

One of the greatest gifts from visiting Asia (and I expect Europe, having never been there) as a North American is the connection with older history. I got much more comfortable with my own mortality walking down streets, and seeing places, that other humans had been visiting for over 1500 years. Provided me an improved sense of perspective.
