Being an insurance agent who wrote vivid military dramas I guess I assumed he was something of a nebbishy Walter Mitty type, to the extent I ever thought about it.
But no, give this dude a cigarette and a martini and he’s ready to hang with the Rat Pack in Vegas.
The part about how the Northern Ireland situation got so impacted and bitter was interesting, never heard that perspective.
Clearly was a brilliant guy. Among other things, he figured out how to be, if not a naval hero, a hero of the Navy without all the trouble and bother of actually being in the navy.
I wasn’t a dedicated fan but read several of his books.
