Goddamn Big Pharma

Post by conjurer » November 5th 2021, 10:53pm

So, today Pfizer announced a potentially fantastic COVID therapeutic:

This, along with a similar drug from Merck, could mean the potential end of the pandemic. Just when I wanted to hate Big Pharma again, they ride in like the cavalry to save the fucking day. Go figure.

Welcome news indeed!

Between these two antivirals and monochlomal antibodies, the worst effects of this bastard may well be on the way to being behind us.

And our wallets a little bit lighter too.

You mean you don't think the government will foot the bill for treatment like they have for vaccines? /S

I used to work in "Big Pharma"; it's not all wine and roses. But the fun part for me was bringing single malt Scotch to the off-site company meetings. I had two directors and a vice president sitting at my table and after the CEO was done talking, he came over. I offered him a glass of Lagavulin.

He left the company and a couple of months later, Exubera was pulled off the market due to low sales. Worst drug failure ever. Tens of billions spent to get it to market and it tanked.

Plusses and minuses to everything - I would really like this pandemic to end, worldwide, ASAP.

Seriously. I lost people. I know people who are "long haulers."

Enough. Whatever it takes.
While a long way from ending the pandemic - as long as it's anywhere it will be everywhere - these new meds will go a long way towards containment. If the next round of studies maintains the same significant level of effectiveness with insignificant incidence of side effects, approval could be pretty quick. A friend in the USPHS thinks emergency approval is possible depending on the, as yet undisclosed, side effects. The sooner they are available, the better, IMO.
