Not anymore. Years back, when first meeting a client for the first time in person I used to enjoy presenting the contrast of long hair, a long beard (or goatee), and a tastefully tailored Italian suit.
That was back when large financial institutions maintained some degree of dress code - and to look like the guy in this picture, but better dressed, was never a problem for any of my clients, or upper management.
But my appearance was shocking - SHOCKING (in a pearl-clutching way) to some of my fussier colleagues who managed far fewer relationships.
The head of HR (a car-and-watch guy) called me to share he received a(n) ‘anonymous’ request to him to enforce the section of the dress code requiring employees to maintain a “clean and well-groomed appearance”. We had a good chuckle and then he told me about the Motto-Guzzi he was thinking about buying after selling his Buell.
Before, the colors were blond, brown… and weirdly some damn red. And then, grey.
Now my face produces some brown but mostly ‘silver’ beard.
That shit will not stand, so now I hardly accommodate more than a tightly groomed goatee.
But that maintenance- so, after a week or two - I’m ready for the clean damn shaven face that my tolerant wife prefers.
