Air Force OKs Longer Hair

Post by koimaster » October 6th 2020, 8:31am

In a new update to dress and appearance standards, the U.S. Air Force is allowing its airmen to grow their hair out a little longer.

Male airmen can now wear their hair up to two inches from their scalp, an extension from the previous mandate of 1 1/4 inches, according to a service release published Wednesday. The female hair bulk standard also increased, from 3 1/2 inches to 4 inches, the release said.

Never got gigged for a haircut while I was in the AF and my hair was probably longer then than it is now (and I still have most of my hair). Didnt have my pornstache until about 1973 though and got called out for being a Cop/Narc many times. Still happens.

Now if they can finally get rid of that "hitler" mustache...........

FWIW- I wore a full regulation beard on/off the first six years of my naval service.

My cousin Larry did as well when he was at sea. Somewhere along the line they changed the regs in the Navy according to him. When I was overseas, no one really cared although you were better off with shorter hair due to lice, fleas and the heat but the rules about hair were never enforced for the most part. On the other hand, if some "dignitary" showed up or some by the book NCO or Officer then you might have been selected to get a real haircut.

Going through Loadmaster school at Shepard AFB, had some "First Shirt" jump in my shit (only 12-15 Navy guys per year go through this curriculum).....

Him- you are not within Air Force regulation 35-10.
Me- Uhm ok, what is that?
Him-You know very well what that is, you need a haircut and will shave that shit off your face today.
Me- OK, I still don't know what this regulation is but I'm within Navy regulations.
Him- Oh, you are a Navy guy. OK, what is the Navy regulation number for grooming.
Me- I only know it by Navy Uniform and Grooming Standards
Him- So what is the Standard?
Me lying..... Your hair can touch your ears" (which it was) and the beard can only extend out up to 4" from your face with mustache hanging right at the bottom of your upper lip (which it was). Do you need info on our uniforms?

Six weeks later at my next Air Force school (C130 Flight Engineer, about 12 Navy students/year) at Altus AFB Oklahoma, was confronted in the VOQ by a graduating Navy student and he explained what our more lenient "grooming standards" were at Altus.......... so I commenced to grow my shit out even longer!

Well, thats what we do.......

That is pretty funny and typical of a "first shirt" in a training environment but surprised he would get into the face of an officer. Well, I assume you were O rank if you stayed in the VOQ. Wichita Falls is not my favorite place to visit. I had a buddy who lived there and I stopped by to see him in 2010 or so. Nothing out there as far as I am concerned.

Enlisted.

Enlisted Navy personnel stayed in the VOQ (maid/room service, blah, blah. blah) while going through these Air Force schools
since we have already been through a year+ of Navy flight training at that point.

Haha, Altus, OK. Was there the last day it was legal to have an open beer in the car and the main street was like a super bowl party.

:GGZ: is my opinion of that. I am surprised they did not have a fish tank to house squids. By the way, did you happen to see a famous faux aviator there by chance? He might have gotten confused about the differences between an A-7D and a Hercules. Both have wings.

When I was deployed to Diyarbakir Turkey, they put us enlisted and officers up in the Turkish officers quarters. Not even close to par with USAF standards. And don't eat anything from the officers mess or you'll be making a mess of yourself. Thankfully, we got some good meds from our PJs. The rest of the time there we went to the commissary and cooked our own food. We even fed the poor Turkish conscripts who drove the buses for our transportation. The way they were normally treated made this a dream duty for them.
