WOW- nice catch!

That could be the original strap, even. DiModell has long been an OEM strap supplier to industry principal brands. Any signature on the buckle? I believe manufacturers were signing buckles and clasps by the 50's, so, if the buckle is signed L-C and the strap marked D-M, I think that would make the strap original or a genuine replacement. The backing material looks a little like the modern stuff which breathes like crazy but I really can't tell from the pic- it'd be interesting if they developed that design that long ago.
