Faberge Alexei FAB-197
Starts off pretty straightforward – grey cardboard box. Ok. Printing’s pretty nice, I guess.
There’s a little book inside – probably details etiquette when getting blown by a girl fancier than you – I dunno, I haven’t read it. A little cloth, unbranded, which is mildly disappointing.
Then you get to the actual wooden box. Fuck me dead. WOW. It’s probably more expensive than any watch I own. Maybe more than any other watch I’ve ever owned. Look how the printing somehow floats above the wood! But okay, okay, it’s just a box. Let’s keep going.
Oh, shit! Okay, this is just nuts. Ok, I’m fuming at the reflections and dust! But seriously. Oh. My. LORDY-lord. How the fuck did they machine the dial that finely and intricately and perfectly? It shimmers and glows and dances and… oh my god… Smellody was right… I’ve become a fancy boy.
Fucking reflections! But, that said, wow. It’s REALLY nice. Like, exquisite. Note to other manufacturers – if you’re going to include indices, you might as well use black diamonds. I mean, why the fuck not?
Normally I like display backs when there’s a decent movement inside. This one has an old movement from the 80s – a Breguet or Piaget or Piguet or something. It’s a 1150, it has twin barrels, it’s probably pretty good. But in this case, I’d rather have 18k white gold than synthetic sapphire. I can look at a movement in another watch, or in the toilet bowl, if I have to.
The strap is just fucking luscious. No other word for it. My first croc/gator/foreskin/whatever strap. Look at that grain. Look at that stitching. Just LOOK AT IT!!!
And then there’s the buckle. A fucking work of fucking art. Fuck! Dan Henry, take note! Like the box, probably worth more than any other watch I’ve ever owned.
Things you may not know? Hands are flame-blued, dial is machined on 100+ year old machine, crown cabochon is a natural sapphire (unlike Cartier), dial is polished using argent grene, a silver powder that “buffs the surface to a soft sheen”, strap is made by hand, the numerals are created “using the exacting hand-worked process of decalque”. According to Faberge, this “produced precise definition, density and volume”. You know what? I think it does. A couple of wristys:
Yeah, this watch is fucking nice. Way nicer than anything I’ve had before. Gonna give it a solid 8.5! Take a look at Faberge if you haven’t already.
If it thinks, it stinks
