Need Watch Recommendation

Post by WIStful » March 10th 2024, 7:51am

goor#1 Hi! Long lurking noob here.

Looking for a watch recommendation and figured you folks would be a fertile ground for such.

Should any of you be so kind as to help out, here is what I am looking for

Classic design/styling. but not in any way retro. Timeless (lol pun), eternal, something that will still look fresh, not dated, decades from now

Under 1k. Used stuff is fine but no more than 20 years old

Three hander, prefer date, mechanical, 36-39mm

Steel case, prefer lugs that are more integral than articulated. Agnostic on bracelet vs strap unless bracelet is really something special

Dial silver->Champagne-.>Salmon/Pink spectrum. Hands dauphin or stick. Indices stick/tapered, no numerals Arabic, Roman or others. Minimal text on dial. Prefer no chapter ring and a deep polished rehaut.

Area of production, Swiss etc, irrelevant.

That seems to cover it for now. I really appreciate any help you guys could give me on this

Thank you!

Welcome. Seems you loosely described a few of my favorites.

SARB037

SARB035

Thanks! The SARBs are about 95% of the way there. Had a SARB033. My nits

Stepped case. Rather dislike the rabbet along the top sides.

Lugs seem a bit short to me visually

Lume on the inside edge of indices. Don't know why but this really bothered me

Prefer no chapter ring but here they are pretty low impact visually.

Overall though, yeah a better SARB is a good conceptualization of that which I am seeking.

The dial color on the SARB037 is utterly fab, love to get something in a similar color

something tells me you won't lyke any of hour recommendations if you already owned an sarb033 than you are already knowlegeble about timepieces so why shoud we guess what apeels to you perhaps a forum searchs and one from google will assist you better
I came here because I thought I would like the recommendations and find them valuable.

Worth adding why here and expanding on the “use the search box” issue which is certainly a valid concern, many new users everywhere often haven't done their homework.

Why here? Extreme breadth of knowledge about watches, not a niche group. The fact that SARBs are a legitimate interest alongside Rolexes is definitely a rare feature.

On the search box issue, I have done a lot of homework both narrowing down my focus and surveying the landscape. Searching forums is part of normal research but only partially fills blanks being inherently retrospective

So my drivers there. I probably should have added something like this in intro. Definitely understand the concern about lazy new users

Yeah I thought I might get lucky. Landscape for affordable watches has certainly changed over the years

Huge proliferation of choices, just keeping up with what is out there seems impossible. Way back when, if it didn't pop up on PMWF it didn't exist.

Their limit back then was 1k USD. I suppose these days 1500 USD would be a similar cap.

One thing that would be nice to have is chrono function guided by those parameters

The Seiko SARK005 is something along those lines. A little big at 40mm but case is undercut.

Maybe it would be more productive to ask if anyone knows of alternatives to something like t

That is a good suggestion. Really like the push button style where they are low profile like that, I am sure there has to be a name for that style of button

Welcome to the forum, goddamn it!

As a professional salesman, I tend to find posts like this tiresome. I have customers come into the store with multiple demands equally tiresome. I can find something they like that takes care of 9 our of 10 of what they want, and yet, it isn't good enough for them.

The Citizen NB1050 is pretty tough to beat on value proposition. What you get for less than 400 dollars is terrific and it doesn't have any dealbreakers although the bracelet is widely reviled. Really just a question if there is anything out there that beats it in ways worth paying for. It isn't very distinctive, which can be a feature or a bug

Citizens thesis for NB1050 is there is still a market for a 400 dollar baby GS. Seems like by internet activity. Will it achieve being a benchmark like SARBs? That doesn't seem likely but probably not Citizens intention and times have changed.

Happy hunting.
Thanks. i was previously registered here as robatsu. That ball took a bad bounce so I gave it a rest.

This has been a quite substantively helpful exchange for me so thanks to the forum.

Yeah it's alright but your budget will get you into The Citizen.
