Watchlords

Hi Everyone,
My first watch was a Citizen Skyhawk Blue Angels edition I purchased in 2009. I bought it online without wearing it and was pretty disappointed when it fit like shit on my 6” wrist. The steel band was terribly inflexible and the leather replacement I bought wasn’t much better.

I joined WUS shortly after that to learn more about watches by reading reviews, asking questions and scouring the internet for dimensions and blogs about dive and military-styled watches. I quickly learned how to buy and sell as a way to try different watches without having to keep the ones I didn’t like that much and to save some money (yeah right). Slowly I built my collection moving from quartz to mechanical. I started with Seiko (Orange Monster was my first auto) and have tried many auto microbrands since. I even tried my hand at watch modding by customizing my SKX173 with a different dial, hands and bezel. All in all I’ve sampled about 90 different watches in the past 11 years and have about 10 remaining in my collection now. These days my budget cap hovers around the $300 mark but hopefully that will change. I still consider myself a noob in the watch hobby world. I like to keep learning all I can when I can. I’m an engineer by profession so I like all things technical.

I’m also a big fan of knives (production folders mostly), fountain pens, tactical pens, multitools (currently have several Leatherman and SOGs) and LED flashlights. Oh, and I just entered the photography hobby with a used Nikon D7100; even more of a noob there.

I recently heard about this website through a WUS acquaintance and have been lurking around checking things out ever since.

A guy who likes watches, knives, fountain pens, and Streamlights can’t be all bad. (I say, Streamlight because that is, in my opinion, the gold standard of LED torches... but who really knows?)

You can find all sorts of good mechanical watches in the $300 range.. and there are no shortage of educated opinions here.

Post some pictures and hang out. It’s the only watch forum with which I am willing to bother... you may feel the same way. But it may take a little while.

Four mandatory things I always carry on my person: cell phone, folder, a pliers-type multi-tool and my SureFire. Never owned a Streamlight but I’m always after my next light!!

Guys who like flashlights should try a few Ultrafire models. Best bang for the buck IMHO. Surefires are the best but spendy and I like Fenix as well.

Down to 21 flashlights which oddly enough is the same number of watches I presently own. Like watches and you probably collect a few other things as well.

I think “Surefire” is Latin for “twice as expensive“ but they do offer a great warranty”. Sometimes I wonder if you are just paying double for that complete replacement warranty of which they boast :). I’ve had zero issues with the 3 that I own.

I have O-lights, a Jetbeam, a few Klarus’s, a Fenix, Nitecore, Sunwayman, and a Pelican 7600 which is my brightest at 1000 lm. I know there are higher output lights out there but I’ve cut waaay back on my spending lately so I’m not even looking at anything because I’ll just want to buy. Haven’t tried an Ultrafire yet but sounds like I should. There’s something about flashlights, knives, watches and multi-tools.....it just feels like you can never have too many—they’re so useful!!

I’ve had a lot of nicknames over the years. My username on this forum (same as most of the forums I belong to) was coined by a friend of mine I hadn’t seen in a long time. We met at a mutual friend’s house for a cookout. I was there early and all settled in with a beer on the deck railing next to me and a hotdog in each hand. My buddy walks up to me and says, “Hey, Pauliedoggs!!” It stuck like shit on Velcro.

Welcome, Paulidoggs. I'm reminded of the song "salty dog", which then reminds me of the drink 'salty dog'.

Then I remembered the character Paulie Walnuts on the Sopranos tv show. That made me remember the actor? Paulie Shore.

Sure there are beer icons. Hit previews, look at the bottom of the icons where it says more smiles and click

Are you posting from Australia? That would account for it.

A new member mentioned having photos from Ipads uploaded directly to the forum not being shown correctly. I asked Dion about it and this is the response below.

That's a common problem with uploading images to phpBB -- it ignores the rotation data stored in images. The issue was supposed to be resolved in the version of phpBB you're now using, but it still doesn't seem to be fixed even in the most recent releases.

The issue only exists with images taken on mobile devices. If the phone/tablet isn't upright when taking the image, it will not have the correct orientation in phpBB.

The best fix for this is to use an image upload service such as imgur. It correctly auto-rotates uploaded images. I'm sure I could write something that would fix the issue as well, but it wouldn't be cheap.

Here’s my current collection. Sorry for the rushed photo. 3 autos and the rest are all quartz. I’m looking around for pics of some of the autos I used to have in my collection. The only microbrands I’ve got now are the Dagaz CAV-1, Spinnaker Tesei (is Spinnaker even a microbrand?) and the Scurfa Diver One D1-500. I’ve sampled Raven, Benarus, Halios, Borealis, Armida, Obris Morgan, MKII, Debaufre, Steinhart and Deep Blue just to name a few. I’m partial to dive watches and pieces with highly legible dials. I wear my G-Shocks and the Protrek in the summer more than anything. In the winter they don’t fit under the cuff of my winter coat so I tend to wear the autos and the lower profile watches.

My grail is a Sinn U1. I need to just start saving but other (cheaper watches) keep getting in the way. I guess it just boils down to a lack of self control :)

^^^Sharp Dagaz and that blue Scurfa is quite nice.

Scurfa definitely makes a well built watch that is a bargain.
