Microbrand U – A Startup School for Wristwatch Brands

Post by Racer-X » March 28th 2019, 9:32pm

"Something unusual is happening in the microbrand world. Chris “Doc” Vail is launching “Microbrand U”, a weekend course to help watch microbrand owners overcome hurdles and become more efficient in running their business. Doc likes to shake things up, so this fits our impression of him.

“The point of our workshop is to flatten the learning curve for the brand owner, in a number of ways. The participants will be able to share experience among themselves, which, if nothing else, helps establish what we’d call “normal” for a startup in this industry – it’s nice to hear others are dealing with the same challenges, and how they’re managing. There’s knowledge to be gained from peers,” Doc says.

Doc is the man behind NTH and Lew & Huey watches, which we’ve reviewed here in the past. Over the past few years, Doc has grown his watch business from a direct sales operation to one with a number of retailers signed up, that from all appearances looks like a growing business."

Yup. I wrote one of my "How Bad Can It Be?" reviews on one of his NTH watches, and posted it over at WUS, and apparently I pissed Doc off pretty good; at one point, he made a veiled threat about punching my teeth in, or something. I found this interesting, since it wasn't actually a bad review; while I wasn't blown over by the watch, it wasn't a piece of shit, either. After letting Doc and his fanbois scream and jump up and down--with some of the non-fanbois pointing out, correctly, that threats of bodily harm were probably against the TOS, I posted again, saying (again) that the watch wasn't bad, and apologizing in general if my review pissed anybody off. Then we were all pals again, Doc settled the fuck down, and Sergeant Bo closed the thread.

Doc seems like one of those guys who likes to bask in the wonderful affection of his fans at WUS (and maybe other fora as well, but I don't know), but gets really pissed when somebody says something non-wonderful. I suppose he might be teaching a course at Microbrand U about trying not to threaten prospective clients.
My little brain can't even comprehend how deep that is.

A course of study enh? Seems kind of expensive for what could be accomplished with a mimeographed list of Asian contacts and a few web addresses. Probably doesn't even include a trial sample of 關係.

Were I to run the thing I would include a douchbag scale along the lines of:

Bullshit name for glass which implies sapphire: DD
Putting "surgical" in front of "stainless steel": D
Gratuitous picture of the Swiss Alps: DDD
Failure to remove the modeling agency's name from the pictures of the "owners": DDDD
Home page hosted anonymously: DD
Fake family history: DD
Breathless description of mundane parts: DDD
Drive-by solicitations in watch forums for your Begstarter project: DDDDD
Claiming to be a "manufacturer": DD
Showing a heavily discounted price for a product that has never been sold anywhere for any price: DD
Any suggestion of a "unique manufacturer to customer sales model": DDD
And so on and so forth.

The beauty of such a thing is that it would serve two purposes: The greater the number of douchbags(D) recorded the better a microbrand's sales prospects while the lower the number the more likely you won't be tortured at WL.

I somehow get a negative view of the entire hobby when any random fuckwit can join the ranks of "manufacturers" with nothing more than an internet connection and a parental basement. At one time you had to actually fly your ass to Hong Kong and come up with your own money to cover the deposit and if you couldn't your black card tourbillon would never fucking ship.
And the fact I'm still living rent free in his head makes me grin and giggle.

My posting was on some group on Facebook, and I agree
