NTH Watches Closing Down

Received via email:

NTH Watches Final Update: Clearance Sale & Warranty Support Details

To my many customers, friends, and fans of NTH,

Due to global economic conditions and increased business challenges, it is with deep regret that I announce NTH has ceased watch production, and will be ending business operations within the next few months.

I am of course very sorry to disappoint NTH customers and fans. Unfortunately, this decision was unavoidable.

We will continue to provide warranty support to customers who contact us before we cease operations.

Effective immediately, we will be selling our stock of accessories and replacement parts, including items never offered for sale, through the NTH website, at discounted prices. These parts include:

* Replacement steel watch cases for our 40mm Subs, 2K1 Subs, and the DevilRay.
* 20mm and 22mm bracelets & straps
* 20mm and 18mm clasps
* Replacement bezel inserts for our 40mm Subs, 2K1 Subs, and the DevilRay.
* Replacement crystals for our 40mm Subs, 2K1 Subs, and the DevilRay.
* Spare bracelet links for our 40mm Subs, 2K1 Subs, and the DevilRay.
* Leather Travel Cases
* UV lume torches

As we will be ceasing operations, and these items are being sold at a discount, all sales will be final, and no returns accepted.

Thank you all, for your years of supporting my business.

Yours truly,

Chris Vail

To Mr. Vail's credit, so far as I have ever seen, most owners appear to hold his products in pretty high regard when it comes to the design/value for dollar ratio.

Same.

Quick review, looks like they made reasonably tasteful stuff.

Interestingly, way back when I was doing my "How Bad Can It Be?" reviews, I happened to get ahold of one of Doc's pieces of
fucking shit
very fine wartches, which I didn't thing was very fucking good. I posted about it, both here and WUS, and, alas, Doc Vail was one of the guys at WUS who swung a lot of fucking weight. Now, most of the guys at WUS were used to my high jinks, and gave me a certain amount of latitude, but Doc Vail (is he an actual doctor? I don't know, and really don't care) was more used to the WUS in-crowd sucking his salty ballz--which were very salty indeed--and he didn't care for my revoo.

To summerize, Doc thought me a terrific asshole and said that he would like to punch me in the fucking mouth. Playing him like a fiddle, I kept my un-punched mouth shut and waited for all the antics to die down, then came out like the voice of reason, saying we all had our differences, and saying that I'd be happy to get together with Doc for a beer or two. Naturally, all the WUS louts said I was a good bloke, and with that, Doc had to play along and say that he'd be happy to have a beer with me.

The wartche was still a piece of shit. Maybe he can go into NYC real estate, like La Mink.

Any idea on why the company failed, esp. it being a WUS darling?

Well, these things go in waves. What's popular in the micros today is not so coveted tomorrow. I would guess that most collectors in this very low-end niche are looking for stuff that's quite cheap, and perhaps Doc Vail, like so many micro producers before him, got a little too much lead in his pencil and started to charge too much.

Of course, like when Peter Lorre said in Casablanca, "I suppose you despise me, Rick," and Bogart replied, "If I gave you any thought, I probably would"; I don't give Doc too much thought. So I couldn't say why he went out of business; he was a bit of a bully, and I always like when a bully fails.

Heheheheh - gold! You know, if Doc Vail had done something useful and worthy with his life, instead of fobbing off cheaply made derivatively (being generous) and often chintzy styled Chinese dive wartches nobody needs, all of the above could have been avoided.

I gave more or less the same advice to Pierre of ALATO when he was touting the Arvet, which by the way seemed like a rather worthy effort.

Basically, why do you want to throw your life away on making minor variations on what are now obsolete trinkets/affectations?

No new ground to break, heck even Seiko has given up on innovation since releasing spring drive. All that is really left is hucksterism/tout le monde. It is a saturated field, like undergraduate calculus, go do something else with all that youthful passion and energy.

Like what could he possibly do truly innovative and unique in an aviators watch? And where is the need for anything innovative or unique in aviator timepieces other than consumerist cravings?

All that is left for a microbrand to excel at is maximizing profits. So if money is your god, go for it but keep in mind just about every respectable ethical system that has ever existed cautions agsinst this approach to life.

One can do more for the betterment of humanity being a school crossing guard than starting a microbrand.

Interestingly, I looked up my early revoo:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35629&p=368732&hilit=nth#p368732

Reading it again, I actually pointed out some good things about the Oberon-whatever-the-fuck. I think I really pissed off Doc because I thought it was a poor value.
The prices are high for what they are, for sure. Those Subs were showing $AUD1,300! REALLY?!?!?!

Killer revoo BTW!

A whole lot of energy being expended here for YET another cheap low-end micro-brand going under.

Suppose I'll hang out here for afew more years to watch when Alato, Traska & Tuseno become extinct--------- thus making room for acouple dozen more Alibaba watch companies to pop up.
Until then, I'll be on pins and needles with anticipation

Are there any examples of a microbrand achieving the dream and becoming a legitimate, fully fledged watch company, whatever that may mean?
Depends how you define it but Steinhardt? Damasko? Bremont? LIW? That brand that does the watermelon watches?

Hans Wilsdorf had a dream.
