7809 Tudor Greenland Exhibition

Post by smellody » February 20th 2024, 9:11pm

Before the Rolex Explorer made its debut on the summit of Mt. Everest there was a predecessor, the Tudor 7809 Greenland Exbition.

Here is a pretty good write up of the expedition and watch: https://revolutionwatch.com/tudor-on-expedition/

My 7809 is the 12-3-6-9 version.

Here are a couple of cool 1950s advertisements of the watch:

I'm a sucker for Oyster history. Sorry Toebee.

Sorry mate, I just hate marketing/advertising/PR/wank. I grew up surrounded by it, the people, the wankers. Dad worked in marketing in TV, then had a small advertising agency. A few of his mates had agencies. I even worked for Young & Rubicam for a few years when I left school. Just can't stand that world and everything in/about it.

Understood. I totally get it. Especially when:

I'm watchin' my TV
And a man comes on and tells me
How white my shirts can be
But, he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarettes as me

But, you have to love the golden age of scientific exploration. Rolex was there. Humans have explored Greenland for millennia, but never before with accurate tools and aspects of the metric system.

Honestly, I'd go back if I could.
