The Shogun Returns

Post by koimaster » January 15th 2021, 1:51pm

They will take offers on this watch.
In 2008, Seiko launched a titanium diver's watch nicknamed by watch enthusiasts as the "shogun" because of its strong and robust design details echoing the armor worn by the ancient Japanese rulers. Previously exclusive to Japan, the distinct diver returns in Prospex, with triangular notches on the rotating bezel and pointed markers on the bezel itself, similar to the original.
Paired with a silicone strap to provide versatility for everyday wear, the watch is crafted from titanium for lightness and protected by Seiko's Super-hard Coating and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal for improved scratch resistance.

Description

Titanium Automatic 200m Diver. Designed for those who treat life as the ultimate adventure, the Seiko Prospex line meets every challenge with technological excellence and style. Part of a rich legacy of innovation in high-intensity timekeeping, Prospex continues to celebrate a long history of sports watch excellence with recreations and reinterpretations of landmark achievements. With its strong, yet smooth lines, and signature arrow-shaped bezel notches, this versatile watch reimagines Seiko's popular 2008 diver's watch, crafted, like the original of light and durable titanium, with a super-hard coating for enhanced strength. The high-visibility white dial, framed by a black and gray one-way rotating elapsed timing bezel, features a date calendar and LumiBrite hands and markers. Including an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, this perfectly balanced timepiece offers a screwdown crown and caseback, and black silicone strap. Powered by a 24-jewel automatic movement with a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, and manual and automatic winding capability, this exceptional watch follows ISO standards for scuba diving to depths of up to 200 meters. 200m Water Resistant

Beautiful. Maybe I'm giving Seiko too much shit on pricing since this is about what I paid for the Orient Saturation Diver?

I don't think so. The problem is that these were $600 or so IIRC. They are very nice but the Orient is finished better and feels like a considerably higher quality watch IMO.

I hate the PlayStation logo on pro-spec wartches.
Lots of watch iconography is dated and pompous and this is a modern look. I like it.

So I'm not sure how I could verify say 2014 or so prices for the Shogun. On Amazon you can check 120 days. If it was $600 range, I stand corrected an still maintain my fuck Seiko pricing beef.

You can buy a new OS300 in 2021 for $600? They were around $1500 last time I looked

+ 20 hours of power reserve and a sapphire crystal don't add up to an $800 price hike. I don't understand the tout on the 6R35 anyway- most of the watches with it are over $1,000 for -15 to +25 seconds accuracy- big fucking deal.

Nah the Shogun was about $600, the Sumo about $400. I think. OS300 around $1,300.

Pompous? Modern? I'm pretty sure Seiko just hired the logo guy from Sony to do theirs.

Would you rather have this on your watch

Or this in your wartch

Actually if they did it on colors like that, it might look cool and not completely bland and boring.

Yup. I'd say the difference in finish is pretty much in line with the price difference.

I know which looks more modern and which looks dated and pompous to me....and I'm not even bringing the hilariously pompous Rolex chapter ring into things

But YMMV

Fair call. I was only making a point about more modern logos having a place in a watch world that can tend to be pretty staid.

I think I prefer the Prospex logo to the script on my Shogun.

I never realised how ghey the crown is. King of the wrist!

I really disliked the Prospex X when introduced but I like it now. It's 3D, it looks like an X-Wing.
