GIMP

Post by TemerityB » November 6th 2015, 9:35pm

Everyone loves Photoshop - I use it at my office - but in the past couple of years, a freeware software called GIMP has come out, and trust me - it does just about everything Photoshop does, and you can't beat the price. I have a PC and the software is quite the memory hog, but I've had a pretty good time messing around with it. I figured there must be something to GIMP, as whenever I go to the MicroCenter computer stores near here, they have entire magazines published about how to use and it and all the tips and tricks users can find. Also: As with all freeware, be careful how you download all programs like this, as they sometimes, depending on the company, can ad bloatware or even worse, malware to your system. One of the best alternatives to Microsoft Office, Open Office, isn't recommended any longer because if you download it directly from them, it's spam city.

I liked GIMP as well but went back to Photoshop. You can get Photoshop Elements for $89 that includes most of the basic features of full Photoshop.

Also heard good things about Paint.net that is also free.

Paint is WAY underrated. For basic photo manipulation, it gets the job done - and you can't beat the price.

I gave soft spot for Photoscape for quick correction and cropping.

And for Android stuff, check out MIX by Camera360...its big fun.

Used GIMP for years as a PS alternative when I didn't want to fire up the Adobe memory hog.

Switched to Paint.net as my preferred application for daily use many years back.

Still have PS, full package and all the other Adobe suite but I rarely ever use them anymore.

I use MS Office for personal and work use; but, used to put Open Office on clients' PCs. Open Office was replaced by LibreOffice but haven't used it since it switched over. Is LibreOffice the malware/bloat ware culprit? I thought they were still pretty straight up?

I have used and still use GIMP/Open Office/Fast Stone Image Viewer since they came out.

I have not had the malware experience that apparently some have had with OpenOffice. I believe I am utilizing the most current version 4.1.2.

For a powerful image manipulation tool GIMP is the way to go IMO - why pony up scratch for something that you can get for free and achieve the same end result.

For basic image correction, cropping, re-sizing, etc. I have used FastStone.

Cnet gives it a 4.5 out of 5 stars from both the editors and user ratings - a nice free product.

I'll make sure to check out the other programs you guys mentioned - there is always something that one program does better than another - no program does everything the easiest, quickest or best way.

I've been using the cloud based Photoshop, it's a business expense, it is incredibly fast at rendering.

OpenOffice has been replaced by LibreOffice. An outstanding open source alternative to MSOffice, and its free. I have used it in professional practice for years.

Can't believe I left this out. Have used FastStone Capture for many years ($20 now). It's great for making tutorials, noting changes on a screenshot, etc. Can save as pdf, png, etc. I use it nearly every day.

It also does screen recording including audio and makes a nice quality smallish sized mp4. Perfect.

Checked out LibreOffice and may need to give a go.

On a side note apparently OpenOffice has not been "taken over/sold/replaced"* to LibreOffice.

(*my choice of words here)

I knew I had recently updated my OO so I did some searching and Openoffice - "OpenOffice.org was once the open-source office suite of choice, but it fractured into two separate projects — Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice. Never mind Oracle Open Office, which was actually a closed-source office suite and was discontinued."

So I am using "Apache OpenOffice" and not "OpenOffice" - a comparison between OO and LO can be reviewed here for those that are interested.

lab, the whole Open Office thing has been a mess for about two years now. My personal advice would be to try Libre Office, which I've actually installed on machines in my business and it's been fine (except for the occasional failure to jibe with Microsoft Office, which is typical when matching older software to new).

Yeah, I really meant that the main tribe has followed ongoing development into LibreOffice while OO sits in a hole and increasingly festers ;-)

Libreoffice is getting regular development releases. Its stable and works interoperably with MS quite well.

I get post-grad clinical students sending me reports and documents which I edit and mark-up and return to them for fixing...they return them with the fixes and I sign off on them for filing. Even bouncing docs back and forth between the suites repeatedly (with comments, revisions, passworded, etc) I still haven't struck any problems.

Got it - until LibreOffice was brought up in this conversation I was unaware of it.

Didn't know about the Oracle Open Office to Apache Open Office/LibreOffice either until I did some research on it.

Looking back - I was probably utilizing the Apache OO suite all along.

I will definitely give the LibreOffice a go, based upon the link from howtogeek.com it looks they give the nod to LibreOffice as well.

Thanks Guys.
