Post by koimaster » August 19th 2019, 10:22am

When Craig Gathercole started watchmaking in 1973 it was a busy trade.

There was enough work from just two local jewellery shops to employ three people almost seven days a week.

Mr Gathercole works alone in his Hobart repair shop and now services about 20 jewellers — but when he retires in a few years his skills of almost 50 years will not be passed on to anyone.

"When I finish it might be the end of it," he told Helen Shield on ABC Radio Hobart.

"I keep getting asked by customers 'What are we going to do when you retire?' and I say 'No idea'."

Mr Gathercole said repairing watches took patience.

"It's easy to do a battery change, but if you're doing a service it could take an hour or five hours."

"The best part about it is meeting all the people.

With the lilt of Irish laughter

Every day and in every way

Now forever and ever after."
