Omega 50th Anniversary Snoopy Speedy

Post by Bahoomba AKA TB » October 9th 2020, 5:10pm

Eddie Phluff takes a look at the newest Omega special edition, which brings back Snoopy and a whole lot of bells and whistles. From the Mr. Minutiae site:

What we’ll call “watch novelty/novelties” (a play on the industry’s own jargon – aren’t we clever) usually don’t strike a bell with some; after all, even slovenly Invicta issues comic book character watches. However, the fact that Snoopy appears on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock and also on the caseback is only about 1/10th of the story of this superb timepiece. The craftsmanship of this new edition is simply stunning, with the caseback work particularly spectacular – it’s such a tremendous watch you may forget Snoopy is even part of it. But, of course, the first instinct is to play with it: On that suave caseback, Snoopy is floating toward the moon in his Command & Service Module; when the second hand in is use, the beloved Peanuts dog travels to the far side of moon (get it?), as the Apollo 13 crew did in 1970. As you can see, the caseback is a virtual work of art in and of itself.

That's a really, really nice watch. However, while Snoopy doesn't bother me all that much, for me it's kind of a disqualifier. I can't imagine walking around with a comic strip character on my 10 grand watch. But the overall styling and the guts; that's a hell of a piece.

I bet it won't bother others, though.

Dunno why it feels like Omega went the way of the shadiest of Chinese joints. Perhaps it's because that's, like, the third time they've re-fried the same Beagle.
I always hope for the best. Experience, unfortunately, has taught me to expect the worst.

That's right. The last Snoopy Omega was in 2015.

I think that means they sell. There is a back story of how it all ties in to Apollo 13, and I'd wager that scores points with that singular breed of watch buyers who like to tie-in, because, well, who the fuck knows.
