Australian Open 2023

Post by jason_recliner » November 17th 2022, 4:00am

Feels like the US Open just finished.

The northern hemisphere tennis summer is building to a crescendo and already the first seeds of a marvellous Aussie summer are sowed.

Novak. Djokovic. Melbourne. 2023. End transmission.

They may as well give him the trophy now.

And to that Aussie woman; she's pretty good I hear.
She's the best. But she retired after winning Wimbledon this year.

Not sure Novak is a sure thing. A few of the new generation are looking good this year. And then there's Old Man Nadal lurking in the dark, dusty corridors of greatness, threatening an upset.

WOW. Old Man Nadal is out. Injured, the hard man of tennis (I know, I know) couldn't beat Mackenzie McDonald. No shame.

In slightly merrier news, Jason Kubler, the quintessential journeyman, the Little Aussie Battler, put up a good fight against a pretty good player with a Eurotrash-sounding name. Onya, Tiger!

O.

M.

G!!!

The icon. The legend. The Aussie quintessence of not being Unaustralian.

Aussie Alexei Popyrin does it! The Belarusian Brisbane youngster pulls off the biggest win of his fledgling career! You all know me, I'm not a man prone to hyperbole. But Aussie Alexei is the greatest Australian tennis player - nay, greatest Australian - OF ALL TIME.

Too soon to start the rallying ('scuse the pun) calls for knighthood? I think not. Long live Sir Popyrin. MBE. AC. Deadset solid 24k gold purebred 100% certified authentic Aussie LEGEND.

In other Aussie Sports news, the Tour Down Under pro cycling race is going on. World Tour pros and local Aussie teams enjoy the sunshine while racing up Walloonga Hill several times. The sports commentator is Robbie McEwen, a truly badass sprinter in his day.

I had gotten up to watch it and it was a world class showing. I became a fan of Stefanos with his speech, I think it came from the heart.
Agreed. His points about Novak raising everybody's game and the entire sport were so true. I feel for the guy. He's so good, he's come so close to winning a Major, not quite made it. It would be sad for him to become yet another great player who spends their entire career in the shadow of one of the Big Three. The way Novak played, he's got to have another three or four years if he really wants it. What blew my mind is his average forehand speed has significantly INCREASED since the 2020 Open.

TEN Australian Opens. TEN!!!
