Been a fave since I was a kid. I still love the whole album.

Re: Dave Brubeck Take Five
Big fan here, too. When he passed away a few years ago there was a big “to do” in the neighboring town of Concord, where he was from.
He was formative in my appreciation of jazz... along with Stan Getz. That, and stumbling onto Kind of Blue with Miles, Coletrain, and Bill Evans... all of who, I would learn to appreciate, were also superb on their own.
Another good dude - Zoot Sims. Plus, what a cool ass name!!

Re: Dave Brubeck Take Five
I'm thrilled I got to see Dave Brubeck perform life back in the '90s on the same bill at a jazz festival as BB King and Grover Washington Jr.
Very lucky to have gotten to see him perform a set.

Re: Dave Brubeck Take Five
What stands out to me is when Brubeck literally studies his quartet as they play their solos; he was an amazing composer, and even in his elder years, continued to invent and perform. The first jazz I ever heard (and watched) was a PBS performance of his quartet, probably when I was eleven or twelve.
He died in 2019, at the grand age of 91, of heart failure, on his way to an appointment with his cardiologist.

Shades of High School, about all I listened to then was Jazz. My nickname then was Django, remember him?

Sounds like call-waiting music to me

…as in, “Reinhardt”!? I first heard his name from Willy Nelson - hadn’t a clue. Now I listen to him and “gypsy” guitar all the time.

Thats the one ! Gypsy Guitar. I tried to play that way but no way. Played trombone but not so well on that either. Always love Sax but never got a chance to play.
Brubeck and Coltrane were big favorites also.
Go to sleep every night listening to Jazz on Spotify.

I just stumbled on to Art Blakey and Red Garland. I’ve also been on a Sonny Rollins kick for quite a while now…

5/4 time signature makes it so distinctive. First time you try playing this with this unusual time signature you feel like a dog looks when he is eating peanut butter.
But it smooths out.
Django is pretty hip. His fingers on his fretting hand were totally mangled. He worshipped Louis Armstrong and finally got to come to USA and meet and play with him.
The feeling was not mutual, Pops was unimpressed with Django, much to Django’s dismay.
