ROLEX, POWS, AND THE GREAT ESCAPE

Post by koimaster » December 13th 2021, 11:31am

One of most well-known prisoner of war camps in Europe during the Second World War, Stalag Luft III is remembered for two major escapes attempts by prisoners and for one of them being depicted in 1963’s The Great Escape.

Stalag Luft III (meaning Stammlager Luft or ‘Permanent Camps for Airmen’) was a Luftwaffe-run prisoner of war camp is what is now Żagań, Poland – with a record of being well-run in comparison to other Axis PoW camps. The camp was set up in during the war for Allied airmen who were shot down and captured, it was one of six of its kind operated by Axis forces.

“Your heart was warm and happy

With the lilt of Irish laughter

Every day and in every way

Now forever and ever after."
