The Original Accutron

Post by koimaster » August 31st 2020, 7:03pm

When the Accutron was introduced in 1960, it instantly became the most talked-about watch in the world. And for good reason.

Watchmaking is an endeavor largely oriented toward tradition. It is about taking the best ideas of the past, with all of their romanticism and idealism, and bringing them into the present. It is rare that a new idea or approach upends what we think a watch can be, and even rarer still that something like this endures, creating a totally new paradigm.

The seventh season of the acclaimed TV series Mad Men opens with ad man Freddy Rumson shuffling some papers and staring straight into the camera. He greets the viewer with an intense “Are you ready? Because I want you to pay attention. This is the beginning of something.” He’s telling you about the new Accutron watch. He talks about its sweeping seconds hand; he talks about its signature hum; he talks about how just the act of wearing that distinctive watch can make a man interesting. “Accutron: It’s not a time piece, it’s a conversation piece.” We couldn’t have written it better ourselves.

This is the story of how a new kind of watch both encapsulated an important moment in history and also helped define that moment in the process.

“Your heart was warm and happy

With the lilt of Irish laughter

Every day and in every way

Now forever and ever after."
