Bulova SE Moon Chronograph Review

Post by koimaster » December 19th 2016, 5:41pm

In 2015, Bulova made headlines when an obscure watch they produced for the NASA Apollo missions, and which was worn by astronaut Dave Scott on the moon, sold at auction for over $1.6 million. During the Apollo missions, Bulova was the American competitor vying with Swiss Omega to have their timepieces be the official ones used during the moon missions. Omega ultimately won, and the story of Bulova's moon watches for the most part has been obscured in horological history.

In late 2015, for a 2016 release, Bulova announced that they would be releasing a "Special Edition" Bulova Moon Watch that aBlogtoWatch went hands-on with here. I'd like to now follow that up with a full review of the Bulova Moon Watch, which currently has the official name of "Bulova Special Edition Moon Chronograph Watch," due to what I believe are some legal intellectual property issues with Omega given their use of "Moonwatch" for their classic Speedmaster Professional model.

I always check the tactile feel of the chrono pushers whenever I look at a chronograph. REL is amazingly in touch with my tactile desires.

He also fails to mention that the lug holes are different in the strap and bracelet models. In the bracelet model they are a little closer to the case, making it difficult, but not impossible , to swap the bracelet for a strap thicker than a couple mm.

Wow! Squeaky voiced wee widdie REL gets around to reviewing something only three seasons after every other site/publication has! Reminds me of full-scale reviews that site publishes on watches that are no longer being made. That's right: Here you go, guys, all the info on a watch you can't buy!

Yes, they're buttery.

Great watch, but no need for the review to mention touching testicles.

I had a hand in the original chronograph worn by Commander Scott coming out to the public.
This story on myBulova:

came out while I was not a member. I read about the stop-watch mentioned in the above linked thread, and saw that a gent by the name of Lawrence McGlynn owned the stopwatch, and had written about the wristwatch that he saw when he went to the bank with Scott to collect the stopwatch.
Scroll down in the link below to see where Mr. McGlynn mentions seeing the watch and photographing it.

After seeing this, and also that Mr. McGlynn had his own website, I contacted the owner of myBulova, Stephen and gave him the link to the McGlynn website. I told him not to ask directly to see the photograph of the watch, but to be a little more tactful and ask for a description only, and after building a rapport with him ask if an actual photo might be shown on the myBulova website.
After a few days, Stephen got back to me and thanked me for the tip, as Commander Scott had given permission for myBulova to be the first site to show the photo taken by Mr. McGlynn, on March 21st. 2014.

I get a kick to think that I had a hand, however oblique, in the appearance of this watch.

It is a lovely watch indeed.
I must admit I didn't like the idea of it being quartz at first, or the use of a polished s/steel band with a parkerized finish case, but a strap can be changed, and I have warmed to the use of quartz too.
