Any words of wisdom on wild baby - actually probably adolescent - birds that adopt us while a broken leg and wing mends?

I recall that wild birds insist on dying in captivity but this guy has stuck it out for a week while Mrs. H feeds him from a syringe. His biological mom has bailed and our attempts to stick him on a branch only result in him falling off like a feathered drunk.

And now we’re invested in him. Moreover the little guy has taken to landing (and crapping) on my head when I go to feed him. Oddly it doesn’t piss me off. Clearly the wing has healed.

You two are doing good by the little guy! Have you checked on local Audubon Chapters that may continue his recovery and reintegration?

Any wildlife rescue orgs you can touch base with for info?

Local shelter is wary of wild birds but I’ve only called one. I’m planning on throwing a wider net tomorrow and will check if there’s an Audobon hereabouts.

The only thing I’ve heard about the wild ones is that he’s on borrowed time if we can’t get him back where belongs. Meanwhile he’s about doubled in size in a week. Good idea on Audobon - thanks.

internet search should reveal some people that can take care of the bird. We've got the crazy squirrel lady, another lady that specializes in rescuing rabbits, and a group that cares for hawks, kestrels, owls and other birds of prey.

As a minor update the rehabilitated bird, who was more difficult to adopt out than I would have guessed, has been residing in the neighborhood trees.

I guess Mrs. H is better at this shit than I gave her credit for. He’s a strong flyer. Up to him now - we wish him Godspeed and tasty bugs.

That is so cool that you guys took the time to help the bird.

I had purchased a large-ish cage for use as a temporary bed and breakfast which mama spent some time staring at wistfully once its occupant vacated the premises. Now we have two brand new parakeets.

I should have seen that coming but didn’t.

Oh well. I’m still in shock that Mrs. H pulled off the rescue and rehab so I’m content to spectate.
