As someone who has had a dog at the center of my life for the past 30 years, I can fully understand and share in this terrible loss. But rather than saying more about this uniquely terrible loss, I would like to share my favorite poem with you. It's entitled "The Power of the Dog," and it's by a chap named Rudyard Kipling, of whom you may have heard...

“The Power of the Dog” (Emphasis in the original)

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear
.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But … you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear
.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear
.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Please take care of yourself, as you will never need that care more than you do right now. And Godspeed, little Boscoe...!

It is so heartbreaking to say goodbye to our furry friends.

I know you gave him a great life.

So sorry for your loss.

I lost my best friend in December 2015 and I am not nearly over it. Never will be, I fear.

But at least I got to have a true, loyal, adorable, wonderful best friend.

I feel for ya, boscoe. Hey - we're all here for ya. And here's to you, boscoe the pug.

Oh, I'm sorry to read this, makes all dog-lovers' hearts ache.

Great poem, Mort!

I'll have a beer in memory of Boscoe the Pug.

Reminds me of the day my first dog (a Hovawart) died. He was the same age as Boscoe the pug... That was 7 years ago, and I still remember it all too well, more than I'd wish. Guess one never gets over these things completely.

Dan,

amazing how our pets/friends become our other selves. We mourn our pets just like we mourn the loss of any family member because that is who they are. The pug will live on here and in your memories. My condolences as a friend and as someone who shares your pain.

As one who has a pack of 5 rescues dogs and have been through this all to many times, I offer my deepest condolences on your loss.

Treasure the memories of him in his prime and all those that surround those years. There are no replacements for these loyal friends.

No matter how some might downplay it (I have a few at work that just don't understand), losing a pet IS losing a member of the family. My deepest sympathies.
Proud "hater" since 2009. Get over it and have fun reassembling yer wartches.
