My son has a older SS Mini-14 he bought from his brother several years ago. It came with a pistol grip stock. Because we live in NYS, where you have to get a permit to fart, his choice was to register said gun with the New York State Police or remove the pistol grip stock.
He chose to remove the stock and bought a nice wood one that was compliant with our NYS SAFE Act. We also removed the flash hider.
I would have bought that gun in a heartbeat but he beat me to it. I built an AR-15 (deadly ASSAULT rifle). I had to register my AR as it has a deadly pistol grip.
I also have a Ruger 10/22 target rifle with a beautiful Fajen pistol grip, thumbhole stock that I had to buy a non thumbhole, non pistol grip stock for.
Interesting enough, both the Mini and the AR have: same cycle rate, same caliber, and same ability to have large round magazines. For some reason the AR platform has been designated as a DEADLY ASSAULT WEAPON (whatever that means) and the Mini is not. I had to modify his Mini's magazines, as well as the AR's cause NYS (un)SAFE Act originally was passed with a LIMIT OF 7 ROUNDS. However NO 7 round magazines were/are available.
The (un)SAFE Act was passed in the dead of night without ANY public input by a group of constipated legislators. It was passed with no thought, with the 7 round magazine limit -- so any LE agency that had AR's could not LEGALLY use them. The same legislators had to gather once again and pass an addendum for LE.
Then the same legislative body once again gathered to impart their wisdom on the unwashed knuckle dragging population to OK up to a 10 round magazine as no manufacturer makes a 7 round magazine. This law also pertained to pistols as well -- rendering most all pistols illegal to own. To this VERY DAY the state has both the 7 and 10 round limit listed. Not clear IF the limit includes one in the chamber tho.
So enjoy your Mini and the 30 rounder in a state that (FOR NOW) allows them; cause when NYS banned the DEADLY ASSAULT RIFLE -- they were NOT grandfathered in.
FORGOT TO ADD: We slobbery, drooling gun owners used to be able to buy, thru internet and UPS delivered have ammo home delivered. Not anymore - any ammo purchased has to be in person and have a background check done. I bought literally thousands of .223 and 7.62x54 rounds just before the ban took hold.
