My latest finds

Here are a few bargains I found on car boot fairs.


6-inch blade on this one, I did some research and it is a circa 1960's Boy Scout knife, the sheath has a "lion rampant" embossed on it, and that was found to be for a Belgian scout band. Razor sharp, hardly been used.
This style handle is based on the WW1 German "butcher" bayonet, also used in WW2.

Next is a little lock knife, four and a half inches closed. Cool multi-cloured pakka wood scales. Never been used, still in wrapper when I bought it.

This one was found hidden away under the seller's table, he had forgotten he had it...
Laguiole are a quality brand and the rosewood or cocobolo scales are really nice on this one. Boxed complete and the lining of the leather sheath has the Laguiole name and logo all through it.

Total layout for all of them gave me change from £15 ($20).

I remember as a 9 year old, having a knife very similar to the Scout knife you found. I also remember carving my initials and the date (1962) into the side of our front porch. I thought it was cool,but Dad was of another mind. But he still didn't take the knife away. Back then every kid my age had a knife. Needed a knife. To carve initials on tree branches (only way to document how high you climbed) and to play a number of games of skill. (mostly made up) I can't remember not having that knife and a pocket knife throughout my childhood years. So did everyone else.
Nowadays kids carry cellphones and wear protective gear to ride their bikes.

Thanks for the comments guys. I remember a game we used to play, but couldn't remember the daft name it had. So as usual, Google is my friend!

We called it mumblepeg, it was great fun. We played the version where you threw the knife into the ground and your opponent had to move their foot to where the knife stuck in, until one or the other fell over when they couldn't reach with their foot, or one of the player's throw didn't "stick in" the ground.

Health and Safety officers can faint now...

I got my first Scouting knife at 10 and have had a knife in my pocket ever since, even at school which nowadays is a felony. I could have had my first strike in the 4th grade and started jr. college in the 6th.

Knives are cool. Wish I could put a razor's edge on damned near any blade like my Dad can.

I always carry around a small Victorinox Swiss Army knife; I use the thing every day and I can't imagine being without one. I see those knives and I think, "let me get a real knife to carry," and then I check the laws:

You can't carry anything over 4 inches. Delaware: The only knives you can conceal are pocket knives of 3 inches or less. Florida: If you're going to conceal it, make it 4 inches or less. Georgia: If it's over 5 inches, you need a weapons permit if you want to conceal it.


In fact, the last time I checked, even a standard, pocket-sized folding knife was against the law here in New York State. I'm serious.

Interestingly, I don't now and never have carried a knife. I can't remember a time when I've slapped my forehead and thought, goddamn it, I wish I had a knife right about now! I suppose it would be different if I was a teenage girl, since I have a poor body image.

Not to off-sway the topic..however..my first major experience with a scout knife was about 1972 when I was 11.
Taking it and flicking it into the ground. Mis-cued and cut a chunk outta my left knee. :cry:

We used to call that game 'splits'.
