Benchmade smenchmade!!

Post by Luftwafflles » May 30th 2017, 7:24am

Not really. Benchmade are great knives. But much like my passion for Tudor and Breitling watches, price wise, they are out of my league. Not to mention that custom hand made knives make even Benchmade's prices pale in comparison. So I have learned to be content with my small collection of Opinels, Moras, Beckers, and Cold Steels. I do think however, that those brands are fantastic quality for the price. Your thoughts?

My most carried knife is a Benchmade mini-grip.
I also have Opinel which are the best value around-anywhere.
Kershaw,CRKT,Esee and Kabar also have some nice stuff that won't break the bank.

I haven't carried a knife since I left the Army. I had a Benchmade hook and gave it away, I didn't care for it. I preferred the Smith and Wesson first responder and the old Camillus parachute cord knife for rescue and the Cold Steel Recon.
The Recon took a beating, it looks like hell, but it always got the jobs done. I keep it in my camping bag. (I don't know why I have a camping bag, I don't camp. It's like paying good money to be homeless)
The Smith and Wesson spring loaded glass breaker will jack a penny up and the blade always cut through a windshield. I gave that to one of my Soldiers when I retired.
The Camillus was always sharp, even with little maintenance, I still keep it in my medical kit.

I have had all sorts of knives in my career, those are the three that stood out to me. Especially the Recon, I hammered, pryed, dug and twisted with it and it is still a great knife.

All were cheap enough, but proved themselves to be great.
In memory of TB/Phfluff, since he isn’t here to continue to give his praise, I will share it for him.

Honestly, I would take a hard look at the Marbles offerings at Smokey Mountain Knife Works...they are capitalizing on the fine name of Marbles, but these made in China pocket knifes are absolutely great values for everyday carry..been giving Xmas knifes to family and friends for over 25 years now, and I'm amazed at how sharp these SS blades are, their level of finishing, the quality of the handles, etc. for their price points...scouts, campers, sow bellys, stockmans, coke jacks, congresses, muskrats, wharncliffe whittlers, jacks, razors...
no, there not as finely finished as today's Remington Bullets or the stag handled Case, but they are great pocket knifes for the dinero...

I never owned a Benchmade - due to a no doubt misguided attempt to let Les de Asis know what I thought about the way he treated my favorite knife seller.

Plenty of Spyderco scattered through the years and still the one I usually tote.

My flirtation with custom product was brief and undistinguished.

In the "more expensive than average but lasts forever and works great" category I was surprised to see the Chris Reeve Sebenza ingratiating itself. In fact that Sebenza might actually be something of a bargain because it replaces a good number of alternatives.

Gets the most pocket time off the farm. Light and fairly strong. Utilitarian and in a pinch better than nothing.

Columbia River Knife and Tool CRKT Good quality and not as pricey as BenchMade. When I bought them anyway, don"t know the $ now.

Defensive folder: This CRKT
Double liner lock.
This blade geometry and needle point are designed for one thing.

Decent large folder CRKT. My next door neighbor, an O5 helo driver told me that many of his pilots and aircrews like this one. He carried it personally.
Double liner lock.
Titanium body. Light, and fairly strong. I chopped with it and the hinge has not loosened up. When open it feels and wields like a fixed blade.

Give CRKT a look. They made decent stuff 5-6 years ago.

Spyderco Salt H1 has been my choice of dive knife for years. A basic knife that holds a razor edge amazingly well, easy one-handed operation, has never failed to cut anything (goes through wire reinforced fishing cable like its not even there) for under $100. No point looking at anything else.

Isn't sharpening the serrated edge a chore?

I was given several Camillus knives by my father. Totally happy with the quality, and gave the Camillus to my grandson. The knife was 50 years old and still was in fine condition when I passed it down to my grandson.

Thank you for your comments. A great post.

Wouldn't know. I don't know if they did anything in particular to help it hold it's edge but 8 years in its never needed sharpening and still cuts like a razor. I have a curved stone for such things, but the H1 hasn't needed it so far. Its not being used every day either though.

Like I said, its been so good there has been no point looking at another knife. I did buy the pocket version more recently and that has been the same.

I tend to buy inexpensive Gerber knives. $15 each and keep one in most rooms and the cars. For the price they are a decent enough blade. Girls carry them in their cars and purses. If one gets lost, is cheap to replace.

Keep a Kershaw in my home office desk. Just too heavy to carry in shorts with wallet, iPhone 6+ and keys.

As to sharpening serrated edges the general consensus is that the Spyderco Sharpmaker works. The actual technique will yield to a google search.

Myodo Foundry H-1 stainless steel was pretty much the rainbow-stripped unicorn of the knife world. Most of the knives sold to divers before H-1 regrettably took and maintained an edge not dissimilar to age-hardened cheese so were ill-suited to, well, cutting things.

Benchmade had one H1 product which I believe hit the market first followed by Spyderco which exploded the entire "Salt" line featuring the stuff. For us older fucks H-1 started out surrounded by skepticism which then turned to "magic" once reports similar to Bedlam's started surfacing. Now it's just another specialty blade steel but still has a little "magic" in its aura.
