Glock 30sfa Glock 30sf

Post by Ofcmark » July 13th 2016, 9:30pm

With all the craziness going on, I've been thinking about replacing my snub 38 with a Glock 30sf I like the idea of 10 rounds of 45acp. I've shot my partners 9mm and like it, I have been trying to get to the range out here where they let you rent weapons to use on their range to shoot the 45. So I was wondering if any of the members here own one and what they thought of the weapon.

I could be wrong but I believe the impetus started with the FBI determining their service round was ineffective after an incident in Miami in 1986. This led to the development of the 10mm which still has something of a cult following. The 10mm proved to be a bit of a handful during training and was superseded by a shortened version known either as the .40 Smith and Wesson or .40 Short and Weak depending on one's level of snark.

Some locals picked up the .40 and it's pretty popular but still not universal as a number of departments employ 9mm and at least one Texas department adopted the .357 SIG which is a necked-down .40S&W.

In the fullness of time and an appropriate expenditure of tax dollars and production of irony the FBI adopted the 9mm in 2015. This was widely mis-reported as re-adoption of the 9mm though the service weapon found wanting in 1986 was actually a revolver.

I'm rather of an STI fanboi and have their "commander sized" 2011 VIP 12 round in .40S&W. It makes me something of an apostate as it is properly chambered in .45ACP which round was cannonized by Jeff Cooper and now sits on that right hand of John Moses Browning. I tend to agree that the .45 should be sainted but I had a couple cases of Federal .40 at the time.

Historical trivia notwithstanding it's a pleasure to have this little sub-forum where I can properly congratulate Mr. Codguy on that fine 30SF in a joyous celebration of hardware bereft of politics.

Thanks Hawk and I'll go on record stating that some day I will own a STI.

Though I like my first and only striker fire pistol (had to try one), I am a dyed in the wool 1911 guy and prefer pistols with pins and hammers.
Was going to put the Glock on the market but instead am gifting it to a shooting niece via FFL transfer as soon as she returns from her graduating cruise. Have nothing against striker fire pistols, just prefer a different platform.

OFC- these weapons are very popular as you well know, will give you many years of service and no doubt your armourer is qualified to work on them. I highly recommend the .45ACP version.

Here is a comparo between a 9MM round and a 45ACP. The author is hedging his bets in this article, so you need to read it to form your own opinion. I, for one, favor the 45ACP for stopping power.
Here's the article: http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/9mm%20vs%2045.htm

After thousands of tax payer dollars spent on extensive testing. The FBI will be using the 9mm for their standard issue weapon again. The new 9mm self defense ammo is much improved and provides twelve to fifteen inches of penetration. The ability to accurately fire, stay on target after recoil were prime factors in their decision.

The FBI is going 9mm when they had the 10mm they found it to be hard for smaller agents to control. They went 40 Cal and started have frame problems with their weapon due to the high velocity of the 40. Then I was told that they were down loading 10mm to 45 ACP specs. And now there back to the 9mm. I guess I’m just a dinosaur still like 38s & 45 and 45 Long colt but my department wont let me carry my ruger vaquero with the birds head grip (looks like the gun Doc Holidays carried)

I never heard about frame problems with the .40 - it's not like it was that high velocity.

Then again I'm not sure how one would compromise a Glock frame using .40 in any event. There was some scuttlebutt regarding the "unsupported chamber" but I was never able to properly vet the issue. In any event that wouldn't have been a frame issue.

And they're not really "going back" to the 9mm. Despite being widely reported as such it would be more accurate to say they're not going back to revolvers.

FBI / HRT did have a flirtation with US-built Springfield .45 1911s which were priced in the stratosphere but they were not widely distributed and despite Springfield's suggestions to the contrary didn't add any luster to the Brazilian Imbels that comprised most of the line exclusive of the Croatian XD which has taken off like a house on fire (in a good way).

When I went to buy my 27 I was able to put 5rds through a 30sf. Not sure if they had an overstock or they were new and were pushing them hard but they had one for test firing at the indoor range. It felt good in hand compared to the 30 due to the diet they put it on but I didn't fire the 30 just the 30sf. I don't shoot that often anymore but it did well IMO, but not well enough to get me away from .40 S&W
My carry magazines are stuffed with Hydra-Shoks also!

I Don't think you can go wrong with any Glock and the sub compacts are just that. I can cover my 27 with my hand and only a little bit of mag ext is visible.

Own a Glock 23 in .40, a XDS 3.3 and Kimber 1911 Tactical II in 45ACP, two FN-S .40 and a Sig P290RS in 9mm.

The .40 is by far the easiest recoil to manage and although not as accurate as the 357 Sig, a damned fine round.

After a hundred rounds of 45 I am worn out. I can shoot .40 all day with no fatigue. Something about the rapidity of the cycle and sharpness of the recoil is just easier to handle. My wife, at 5'3" actually carries the Glock and considers it an easier round to manage vs her 9mm Sig. Of course the Glock frame is larger; but, I don't think that factors as much as one would think.

I find the .40 easier to handle than the 9mm Beretta I used to carry.

Cannot believe how much I love the FN pistols. Didn't think I would ever love anything as much as I have loved our Glocks; but, these have the edge.

Nah. Carl would be OK with it. This is about weapons with some contemporary history stirred in. 1986 FBI incidents, agency procurement policies, internet speculation on unsupported chambers (which never did reach the fever pitch of internet speculation on revolver frame locks) and that sort of thing.

And as the late Jeff Cooper was moved to write:
If you don't understand weapons you don't understand fighting. If you don't understand fighting you don't understand war. If you don't understand war you don't understand history. And if you don't understand history you might as well live with your head in a sack.
