The Greatly Improbable, Highly Enjoyable, Increasingly Profitable Life of Michael Kobold

Post by koimaster » August 24th 2011, 5:20am

It is quite possible that Michael Kobold is one of those inexplicably lucky people, one for whom good things just seem to happen, the kind of guy who wins the lottery twice. Let me give you an example. One day in 2003 he's sitting at his desk at Kobold Watch, where he and three employees make and sell high-end mechanical wristwatches from a quiet industrial park in Pittsburgh. The phone rings, and Kobold answers it. The man on the line is from New York and he's gruff; he apparently owns a Kobold watch and likes it enough that he wants another one. Kobold, thinking the guy with the gruff New Yorky voice is a cop, offers the guy his standard 10 percent police discount. "Finally," Kobold will later recall, "he told me he was an actor and that he was in something called The Sopranos." Keep in mind here that Kobold does not watch TV. He could not name a single artist in the Billboard Top 20 and would be hard-pressed to recognize a film actor who isn't Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson. Pop culture references sail wildly over his head.

Interesting article. I was expecting the guy to be the Lance Armstrong of horology (Armstrong contracted cancer, IMO, by taking too many PED's, then parlayed that into a get out of jail free card which enabled him to take even more PED's. The big lie is that he won races despite having contracted cancer. The reality, that he won BECAUSE of cancer, fuels the irony of his life) but Kobold is different. What was made clear is something I already suspected: the guy was born rich and thus has deep pockets and in his mind's eye he did nothing wrong by impersonating a police officer.
He reminds me a hell of a lot of a buddy of mine, also from Pittsburgh by way of another country (in this case Syria). This guy, whose real name is Yussef Elias (AKA Joe A Liar), flunked out of 4 colleges, all the while telling anyone who would listen that he was a physician. Eventually, he DID earn an MD (in Ireland, at a school where you can essentially buy the degree) though, fortunately, he does not practice medicine. He did make a minor splash in the business world (a la Kobold) by selling booze packaged in juiceboxes to the airline industry. He is an extremely likable fellow. The moral, to me, is that these people aren't extremely lucky. They are extremely rich. It's easy to win if you can keep doubling down with no regard to paying off losses.

Wait! Armstrong had testicular cancer which spread. It has nothing to do with PEDs. As to his cancer treatment, he had massive chemo treatments and as someone whos' wife died undergoing Chemo and has seen what it does firsthand, your second statement is absurd.

His chemo changed his body chemistry which enabled him to win as did his training and will. He came up clean on every test and there has never been a positive result that would have altered a race. Considering how much the French hate him, they would have stripped his titles if they had a shred of proof. As to the german rich kid.... fuck him.

To further derail this thread...

Beating metastatic testicular cancer (which is actually a very beatable, curable, toy poodle strength cancer), winning all those bike races, Lance also managed to date Sheryl Crow after she dated Kid Rock.

The thought of his girlfriend getting nailed by an ugly scarecrow redneck like Rock and still being able to gather enough testoterone gumption from his chemotherapy burnt testicles to muster a reasonable hard-on is truly a feat.

Koi, I hope you're kidding. LA has not "come up clean" on every test, and the testers are in on it. He's been busted by everyone he's ever been close to and his association with Dr. Ferrari (who also believed his over use of PEDs caused his cancer) speaks for itself.
Armstrong comes closest to the initial description in this article. He fell in a bucket of crap and came out smelling like a rose. You want to feel sorry for a cyclist think of Laurent Fignon (cancer victim and now deceased) and Marco Pantani (railroaded by the same corrupt organization that gives Lance a pass and also dead). LA is the biggest corrupt phony there is, on a scale that Eyal Lalo will never match. BTW, what did he do as soon as his pharmaceutical advantage started to pay off? Dump the mother of his kids (who stood beside him when he was an ill nobody) the same way his father dumped him. Then cheated on Sheryl Crowe. Compared to LA Kobold is a paragon of virtue.

For dumping Sheryl Crowe, who is, after Susan Boyle, arguably the hottest broad on the entire planet, somebody should put one in Armstrong's ear.

He was treated with Cisplatin. his cancer was advanced and to say that the testing labs were in on a cover-up like this is more than a stretch.

His 99 tests could have been re-tested at any time but there are questions of how they and those of everyone else have been preserved. I would love to see proof of his cheating rather than waste millions of $$$$$ on a egotistical witch hunt by a US investigator.

After four years of marriage, Lance and Kristin announced their divorce.

In the years since, Kristin says she's been able to accept responsibility for the mistakes she made during her relationship. In April 2006, Glamour magazine published an article Kristin wrote called, "What I Wish I Had Known About Marriage."

In her article, Kristin says she gave up her independence after getting married, and in doing so, lost part of herself. The opinionated woman she once was slowly eroded, Kristin says, and she became a "yes" woman who tried to please everyone but herself.

"It wasn't Lance saying, 'You should be like this' or 'Do this,'" she says. "It wasn't him making a mandate and me being a mouse. It was me trying to emulate whatever I thought would be the perfect wife or the perfect mother. ... We think we're trying to please somebody for the sake of our marriage, but then if you ask Lance today if he appreciated that, I think he would probably say, 'Well, that wasn't the woman that I fell in love with.'"

Koi, you don't know much about professional bicycle racing. If you did, you'd know he used PEDS. So does everyone else. It's the irony and the bold-faced lying that makes him a piece of crap. The fact that you lost your wife to cancer should enrage you that this liar is living the life of Reilly, making sanctimonious speeches for millions of dollars.

Lance Armstrong's Endgame | Bicycling Magazine
www.bicycling.com

The Landis interview is even better. To believe LA didn't use drugs is like believing in the tooth fairy. And if you want to lament the waste of public money ask yourself why the U.S. Post Office spent millions of dollars buying this cretin drugs. THAT seems like a waste of taxpayer money to me. All so he could ride a bicycle in Europe, where they don't even use the U.S. Postal Service.

BTW, Kristin, his ex, is terrified of him, and she should be. My guess is, if you'd have asked Nicole Brown Simpson what she thought of O.J., on the record, she would have said he was a great guy.

This fairly recent 60 minutes piece was both revealing and changed perceptions..
In a personal noted, I always thought is very possible, blood doping happened.
I'm not sure if the French hate Lance or not but what is a fact is that, lots of his former American team mates, don't seem to think of him too highly either.

Explains everything. All bike racers blood dope. In '84, when we won Olympic Gold, it was done openly. It's not that Lance "cheated" (is it cheating if it's an open book test?), it's the fact that, IMO, his massive intake of PEDS, including HGH, caused cancer. His "treatment" allowed him to take EPO, among other drugs (and even experiemental, next-generation EPO) and then he couldn't even just win and shut up, he had to act like a big-mouth Saint and pretend he was a victim. Most people get cancer because they're genetically predisposed, or (in my case) they were unknowingly exposed to carcinogens. Imagine a 6 pack a day smoker getting lung cancer and then, somehow, parlaying that into celebrity status and having the world view him as a brave man who cheated death, someone to be admired and listened to. It's like that, but worse. Imagine if Tiger Woods caught the clap and the drugs he took had a side effect that made him a much, much, better golfer and then he went on the lecture circuit to inspire couples to be faithful to one another. It's like that. But worse.
BTW, LA did test positive...numerous times. One method he used to get out of it was back-dating which drugs he could use as part of his cure. Anyone who knows anything about pro cycling (e.g. Paul Kimmage, the guy who interviewed Landis) knows it's totally corrupt. That's why Landis, an essentially honest guy, got chosen to be made an example of.

"There are no miracles, only explanations."

I'm not current on sports generally or Armstrong specifically. However, it seems we may be ignoring both the lessons of history and the legal principle of falsus in uno falsus in omnibus.

Without going any further than the posts and links provided here, I'm already leaning toward "witch hunt".

First, 60 Minutes has already exhibited a woeful lack of due diligence when vetting their sources. Perhaps I'm the only one being reminded of Memogate by this mess but it sure seems like deja vu all over again. I'd hoped they would have learned from previous episodes and maybe they did but it's looking a little gummy from where I sit.

It's human nature for people of LA's status to be targeted by folks looking for their 15 seconds of fame and / or bitter for whatever reason. It's 60 Minutes nature to be bamboozled by them. If there's an Eyal Lalo in this crowd I'd submit Floyd Landis for consideration - his veracity is questionable.

Landis says the accounts are satire and they may be protected by free speech, but they could undermine his efforts to bring down Armstrong in a court of law. Landis is a both a potential witness and a plaintiff in cases involving Armstrong's alleged use of performance enhancing drugs.

There's also the UCI lawsuit and other legal complications that Landis has been embroiled in since he himself was banned after cycling and stripped of his Tour de France win after failing his own drug tests

Armstrong has long accused Landis of being a jealous and bitter rival with a vendetta against him. All these accounts and tweets make it look like Lance is right.

I have nothing to add.

Whether the government has enough to convict him, however, is an open question. Given that Hamilton, Floyd Landis, and other former team-mates apparently lied under oath in former testimony (denying that they had doped), they should be relatively easy witnesses to impeach.

The primary witnesses, if they're telling the truth now, committed perjury earlier. Call me crazy but if someone is fessing up to having given false testimony before, his credibility now is shot smooth in the ass - anybody that previously testified to "no drugs" is suddenly the keeper of the given word now that he, what?, found God? Had an epiphany? Got booted from the team?

Hamilton also said that, contrary to Armstrong's claim that he has never failed a drug test, Armstrong actually did fail one in 2001--in a Swiss race leading up to that year's Tour de France.

Wait. Was it a bunch of tests, no tests or one that came up positive. The key word here is Hamilton SAID and believes (as apparently some here do as well) that it was buried - perhaps so but it's going down the road of the faked moon landing conspiracies.

In fact, this [allegedly confronting Tyler Hamilton] may have been Armstrong biggest mistake of all. Even if prosecutors find themselves unable to indict him on a drug charge, they could still nail Armstrong for obstruction of justice.

Just like they did with Barry Bonds, who they weren't able to convict of perjury (or anything else.)

Prosecutors and investigators don't like looking the fool. Generally they don't but I think we should be circumspect over charges because of selective memory - everybody remembers Barry Bonds getting a load of grief - nobody remembers he wasn't convicted of anything until the obstruction charge got latched onto.

I'll defer to both the good Doctor and Koi - I have no interest in sports and won't invest the time needed to get up to speed on this thing. But, just based on the linked topics, this does appear to be subject to oversimplification.

Are any of the witnesses "clean"? That would change my opinion but so far all I'm seeing is people that are recanting previous testimony and/or could well have unsavory motives.

As far as I'm concerned, citing 60 Minutes isn't much different than citing Daffy Duck - and I'd say that if Memogate targeted a Democrat rather than a Republican. They've become the National Enquirer of broadcast television - roughly equivalent to getting one's news from the checkout line of the supermarket.

I suppose it also means I approach the topic without prejudice.

Well, I do admit to prejudice in the case of 60 Minutes. That much is for sure.
I've seen better out of high school journalism classes.

Edited to add:
This fairly recent 60 minutes piece was both revealing and changed perceptions..

Oops - I hadn't noticed that before.
I guess that means you're now emotionally invested in your opinion.
I hate it when that happens.

Perhaps we should reconvene in a years time and note if anything has gone to court and what a jury of his peers has decided. ...not that that would change anybody's opinion.

Nice one.

But the point is that everyone remembers the charge but no one remembers the dismissal.

From my admittedly perfunctory view of this mess, Armstrong has already been tried and convicted. Regardless of whether he is found without fault the mess remains.

I'm not sure if that's a failure of American media, the population in general, or the justice system. But I'd bet the rent the guy has no chance whatsoever of clearing his name at this point. Much like the dude with the "Back to the Future" car. If LA was a pure as the driven snow (unlikely) he's already toast.

Oddly enough, I believe Eddiea's viewpoint to be valid.

Perfunctory, without thought, arbitrary, reliant on discredited sources and possibly capricious but valid nonetheless. My guess is that being a founding member allows a degree of "handwavium" without consequence.

I believe it was Anatole France that noted (and I'm paraphrasing here) it doesn't matter if 20 million assholes say something stupid - it's still stupid - or something like that. Therefore, throwaway remarks about other races or other opinions will be accepted simply because they're in the majority - they might be totally fucked in the ass but if enough old timers accept the bromide there will be no challenge.

Oddly enough, this doesn't discourage me, it energizes me.

But, I admitted to having no knowledge of the topic at hand and I stick to that declaration.

I believe I have a pretty good sniffer for prejudicial crap even in a topic I only started investigating an hour or so ago. Shake and bake opinions are a dime a dozen. Neither Eddie nor the good Doctor have offered anything in the way or argument or enlightenment and that is the very definition of "intellectual laziness". It's not like I'm engaging them in argument but rather I'm engaging some sorry ass pointer to someone else that expresses their thoughts better.

Bullshit.

Come out from the shadows. The referenced links fail to convince me and wouldn't convince anyone that didn't already have a dog in the fight. Tell me, in your own words, why I'm full of shit. I'm pretty good at changing my opinion when I'm proven wrong - here's an opportunity to see it happen in real time.

Is this Kobold guy even around anymore? Have not seen any new models for sale in years. I believe Kobold and Korsbek have both gone away. Could be wrong-anyone know anything about these guys?
The last I heard of the cocksucker was when the Sherpas who supposedly learned how to make a Kobold watch were pissed off that he hadn't paid them. Kind of like a Renatoe Black Card program with less grease and fewer leased Audis.

Re: The Greatly Improbable, Highly Enjoyable, Increasingly Profitable Life of Michael Kobold

Perhaps this thread preceded Lance's confession, but the man certainly did dope and he doped better than all his competitors. His whole team doped; they've all admitted it as well. He tested positive during the 2003 TdF for a corticosteroid and they gave him a backdated TUE to get past it. Nobody wanted to upset the Armstrong gravy train.

He would have gotten away with it if he'd found a spot for Floyd Landis somewhere when he needed a job. If he hadn't come back after 3 years to race again he might've been fine as well. His questionable biological passport numbers during his comeback might have sunk him if Landis and several former teammates hadn't.

I used to be a HUGE Lance fan that wanted to believe he was just that much better than everyone else but after many years of watching cycling and all the riders getting busted, it should have been obvious that he was doping. He drops his competitors like a sack of tators and can still carry on a conversation over race radio with his DS. Bullshit!

I'm expecting Froome to get busted one of these days. That shit he pulled in the Giro two years ago was like he was on rocket fuel.

As for Kobold watches:

"We made our name with our watches. Hand-built in our workshop located at Merry Oaks Farm, an hour's drive north of Pittsburgh in the heart Western Pennsylvania's Amish Country. Our watch cases are produced in-house at Merry Oaks and proudly carry the designation "Made in USA" on their backs. Invented, designed, prototyped, manufactured, assembled, and tested in-house.

and if that wasn't enough:

29 July, 2019

The government of India today acknowledged its involvement in the 2015-16 economic blockade of Nepal. The blockade was the fourth such action India took against Nepal since the 1960s. Until today's announcement by the leader of India's ruling political party, BJP, the Indian government vehemently denied any involvement in the blockade.

Why is this announcement important in relation to Kobold?

In 2015, just as India's blockade was starting, I flew to Nepal to make final arrangements for a shipment of fire fighting vehicles intended to be used for the so-called Fire Truck Expedition, an initiative designed to help Nepal's tourism industry get back on its feet after the small country was hit by two major earthquakes just months earlier. The earthquakes were the worst natural disasters in Nepal's history and caused a tourism to come to a virtual halt.

The Indian government mistook our expedition for a cover C.I.A. operation designed to publicize the blockade in order to cause an international outcry over the inhumane embargo. At the same time, Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Oli charged my colleagues and me with publicizing the blockade, a request with which we complied and which culminated in a prime-time Fox News segment in which the blockade for the first time made it into the mainstream news cycle. Ten days later, India lifted the blockade as a result of many other initiatives, as well as partly because of the public humiliation as a result of the Fox News piece.

In retaliation, the Indian embassy in Kathmandu secretly orchestrated a fierce opposition to the fire truck expedition. Despite this, we are now working on delivering the fire engines to Nepal. At the same time, Kobold continues to get back on its feet, with customers receiving their watches one by one. Progress has been made, but we are working on doing much more to rebuild the trust we enjoyed with our customers before this saga began, and to repair broken relationships.

In 2020, Kobold will make a major announcement with regards to the future of the company. Every last customer will have received his or her watch by that time. My colleagues and I are committed to building Kobold back better and stronger than it was before ex-employees colluded to sabotage the company.

To all the loyal Koboldians who understood that this was a mission worth embarking on, despite the considerable loss of reputation and goodwill -thank you for your support, I will show you my personal gratitude in the course of time. To everyone else: My sincere apologies. My team and I endeavor to make this up to all of you.

Sincerely yours,
Michael Kobold
