My Cayman was killed... I was not even hurt

Post by Datsun240Z71 » December 11th 2025, 4:34am

Thankful to walk away from a really big impact Monday, December 1 virtually unscathed. Can't say the same for the 2019 Porsche Cayman I bought a year ago that sacrificed itself for me. My first accident of consequence in about 40 years and my first airbag experience. Kid turned left across three lanes of traffic. We both had green, and he said he never saw me (red car with 8 DRLs?)... but he definitely was at fault and was also lucky to not be hurt. Both vehicles going to salvage. I hit the Durango hard (probably at about 40mph) over the passenger front wheel, which turned me in his direction with my driver's door next to his passenger side and forced him headon into a guardrail. Had a split second to brake. Glad it wasn't worse. He had no insurance as it turns out although they showed proof of insurance at time of incident. These are the aftermath...

So glad you weren’t injured. You obviously had a very bad wreck there, I know you said it happened on the first. It’s still monitor yourself because the impacts of those type of actions could take several days for injuries to show up. Cars can be replaced. People can’t glad you’re well.

glad you emerged unscathed. what was it like when the airbag went off? painful??
No big deal. Did not even realize they went off it was so fast. Not a single scrape, bruise or anything! And my glasses were not disturbed and no bruise on my nose. Amazing!

The injuries I've heard about and seen from airbags are primarily from arms and hands being forced back into the driver's face because they were holding the steering wheel incorrectly. I do 3 and 9 o'clock or 4 and 8 and NEVER hold the steering wheel at the top.

Driving like an inattentive jackass - AND no insurance? Yeah, that’s a modern young person.

I agree with COD. Driving has become more annoying than ever among scrolling and auto-pilot day dreaming idiots.

Bright red and beautiful - but he doesn’t see anything. I’d be willing to bet he’s telling his friends - and mom - that it was ā€˜the guy in the Porsche’s fault’ and he somehow got screwed because ā€˜the insurance company’ made a mistake.

Not too many years ago, that kind of impact would at a minimum leave you bruised and banged up… but now, because of the superb manner in which Porsche utilized Mercedes-Benz’s brilliant idea of shock-displacing crumple-zones, a small sports car being collected by a large SUV resulted in merely collateral damage.

You’ll be able to get another cool car long before a broken arm/leg/foot/collarbone would heal.

So, while society gets dumber- at least cars are, indeed, safer.

Still, sorry for your loss…

Poor car šŸš—. It was pretty.

I was set to get one before I bought the Ftype. Unfortunately, I just didn't fit well and the fuse box cover and my feet were not going to get along.
Even though their quality is eclipsed by Porsche, the Jhaaaaaag has turned out to be not too shabby - even though it’s not German. Or, weirdly, even British! šŸ˜‰

Found this locally today. Will pick it up early next week. Upgraded GTS model in a slightly different red. 19k miles on 2018 model recently serviced. Not a mark on it anywhere.

Sweet. I'd find a way to slip in there and drive it.

The 718 GTS is a great version of that platform with the dual personality boosted four. But if a little is good, a little more is better…. And since the GTS breathes in a little more boost - it’s a little ā€˜more better’!

Manual or PDK?

But Good (Watch) Lord - that is SO RED! I’m not allowed to enjoy such a hue - due to its extremely high visibility…. šŸ˜†

PDK.

After 6 knee operations and then dual replacements, and a back issue... no more manuals for me (except my rarely driven 1971 Datsun 240Z).

Very cool. Back when it was sport-o-matic a non-manual was a sporting compromise… who’d a’ thunk there would be a time where a manual transmission would be a sporting compromise!?
