And that tends to make an aggressive drive a little hairier when others may be out with the same intention, so I decided to take my Sunday drive TODAY - on a Thursday while everyone was at work.
It was definitely the right call.
Even at $7.10/gallon.
This car is old, but I love it - very limited electronica, rear wheel drive, 333.33 ci aluminum V8 [M273], DOHC, 4v, VVT, direct injection, bolted to a 7-spd transmission in a magnesium case. Engine, fuel , ignition, & exhaust tuning have yielded a reasonably conservative 435hp. The chassis is a steel-sprung 3,500lb 2+2 coupé that is very sure-footed when driven well, but can deliver more power than the widest of the still- pretty-narrow 18” rear Michelins available can put down.
That typically means heavy throttle creates wheel spin through 3rd and even 4th depending on the road surface.
The engine is normally aspirated but the power comes on so very hard from 4200rpm up you would swear it was turbocharged. But that can also result it exceeding its traction threshold… creating unnecessary excitement when overdriven. Every now and again I’d ride a fat wave of mid-range torque out of a turn exit but would end up rolling on just a bit too much throttle - triggering a downshift followed by violent wheel spin and all hell breaking loose.
So today I simply enjoyed and celebrated an open road. Beautifully untraveled backroads washed in fall sunshine while I listened to RUSH occasionally become drowned out by a howling V8 exhaust popping and burbling while my hair whipped all around like Animal from the Muppets.
And it was good. Real good.
- and that’s the view from the road!
