VW Passat new headlights

Post by mrneddles » May 18th 2020, 8:49am

Like most, the protracted idle time during the lockdown has given me time to attack some projects. Case in point, my daughter's 02 Passat GLX wagon with 5-speed manual. We have had this car for two years, slowly restoring it to the sharp clean driver it is now. I had one of these new when I was younger (including a nicely written broken English note from the German factory worker who was assembling it during 9/11, but that's a story for another day). Mind you, all of the restoration to this point was done via pen, i.e. me signing a check. I am not "handy", and have no mechanical training.

With the help of YouTube and my first ever ratchet set, we were able to do the job in just over two hours. It amazes me how much a fresh set of headlights wakes up a tired car. She loves this car, and is over the moon with the final results. Hopefully in 20 years when she looks back on this deplorable pandemic, she will remember the afternoon getting hands greasy with her father.

Thanks for looking!

Looks great! Geez, you had to drop the bumper and grill? Yikes.

I’ve had good luck buffing the haze off them. Provided the lights were still working, they looked like new when done. Used this kit.

Thanks! I had the original headlights restored once with a buff and polish when I took delivery of the car. They did not apply a clear coat after the polish. You can see the result after two years. I elected to buy new ones this time around.

Awesome father/daughter bonding moment. Kids typically have more appreciation for things if they put hardwork and sweat into it imo.

I did the same thing with a niece on her Civic some 4 years ago. After the hard work was completed, I put a top coat of KBS Diamond clear over it, still looks perfect as the day we polished and highly recommend it.

Excellent job! I have to take my car to the deal to get new wipers.
I hear you. Prior to this, a "foaming soap" nozzle on my hose was about as technical I would get with my cars. This project gave me a warm job satisfaction sensation that I really haven't felt in 20 plus years of medicine. Certainly felt better than the day prior, telling a wife her husband has colon cancer as the first words I've ever uttered to her, spoked from 6 feet away, through a mask, while she is in a running car ready to drive him off to a CT scan.

Yikes - Gerdson is spot on here *but* you get a pass because you’re new. Hell, you didn’t even know you were handy - but check it out, you ARE!!

That’s so cool! I love working on my and their cars with my girls... it really can be fun. And you just can’t beat the end result = improvement! And if you have any concerns about you time spent - give the Dealer a quick call to price out two new lights (which, let’s face it - that’s what it looks like you did)!

Lastly - I would be remiss to not complement you on that cool Macan peaking into frame. What? We’re watch-(and-car)-people... we see the tiny details!

Good bonding moment with your daughter and turned out well.

Have to say that, amid all this craziness, I have a rediscovered appreciation for hard manual work. Keeps my mind busy.

There are Polish hillbillies? The mind reels.
I find tv watches to be like the guys who raise their truck you need a fricken ladder to get in. It’s a attempt to look cool... that’s all.

I wanted to use a relatable term. Hillbillies, rednecks, whatever - countryside people with the following bio/mental parameters on an X/10 scale:
Intelligence: 2-3/10
Ferocity: 7/10
Depleted gene pool: 9/10
Devotion/fanaticism: 8-9/10
Blood alcohol level: 10/10
