Something new

Post by Nuvolari » July 5th 2015, 6:36pm

A new obsession lately has been a Montblanc fountain pen with an oblique nib. It arrived recently, and I like it so much I've decided to start keeping a journal again to stay in touch with the craft of a handwritten narrative.

That said, I think what I really need is a Le Grand 164 fountain pen... Then I'll be all set... :)

Very nice!

I never found the love for nibs.

Nationalism: a profound longing to go back to a past that never existed.

Years ago I had a nice Waterman I bought myself for college graduation. Loved the way it wrote but after it got lifted at my third nursing job, I couldn't bring myself to buy another "expensive" pen.

While I certainly appreciate the beauty, I have stuck with my Pilot G-2 gel pens since I found them. Not the same as the custom or high ends but a reasonable compromise in comfort, for me.

Congrats on a beautiful pen.

I got my first Fisher in 1979, and have used them exclusively for 20 yrs. I love the way they write.

My wife used fountain pens for years, but not so much, now. I never got the hang of it, and my handwriting looks like that of a mildly retarded 3rd grader.

I've got several Pilot / Namiki "vanishing point" fountain pens and a pile of the Namiki ink.

The Pilots are the shiznit because they're stealth. A half-decent fountain pen that doesn't advertise itself. It looks to the outside world like a standard retractable point ball point pen.

A good enough fountain pen that's the polar opposite of ostentatious and will never once be noticed.

And if you're feeling that the Pilot is too pedestrian the Namiki line has plenty of other stuff to offer.

Bloody hell, this takes me back to my first days at school
We were taught to write with a ink pen that used to be dipped in ink and we were given pencils
No gel or ball point pens to be seen anywhere.

Then we graduated to fountain pens that you had to fill, none of this cartridge nonsense.

I have to admit I still much prefer using a fountain pen to this day, don't get a lot of chances to use one but when I do it is a pleasure.

Makes me feel old now.

I get the same modest thrill cleaning and filling my fountain pens from ink bottles as I do with setting and winding my mechanical watches. Love the way the ink (I always choose a sepia color) flows from the pen onto the paper. Anachronistic? You bet - in every sense of the word, literally ana chronos - against time. As I get older, I find that I consciously choose to do things in an outmoded fashion, i.e. "the hard way" because I just enjoy it - and I get a kick out of ignoring those who tell me how troublesome the old ways are. Anybody want to join me in opening a blotter paper and pen wipe manufacturing company?

Congrats on the oblique nib - makes quite a difference, doesn't it? I put a broad italic nib on my Parker Duofold and have really enjoyed the results.

Being left handed I have found not only fountain pens a pain in the ass but any pen that does not have relatively quick drying ink a pain in the ass due to smearing.

I have not figured out how to write from right to left to avoid this problem.

I'm with you, Falsy - there is a definite link between the two, for tactile reasons if nothing else!

I just recently picked up a monteverde and some Pelikan Edelstein ink in Topaz... The ink choice is a bit like selecting a leather band... Other people may not like it L, but who gives a damn? :D

My one and only Montblanc roller ball pen. Got it a few months back at the local Antiques store
near my house don't wanna say what I paid cause I'm not 100% sure if its authentic or not according
to the seller her purchased it back in the early to mid 90's but its supposedly dates back to the 50's
or 60's? Which I believe Montblanc did til 1990? I did buy authentic Montblanc Ink and they do fit inside
the pen writes like butter.

So a friend at my office mentioned Michael's had unfinished boxes that he decided to turn into a pen case... so when I was out running errands today I decided to check it out.

And I found this thing for $6.99...

I already had finishing material at home, so I sanded and stained and watch the Formula 1 race... and a few beers later I ended up with this:
