Shawn Wilsie says good-bye to Watchgeeks

Post by koimaster » March 23rd 2010, 8:14am

to geeks...........@ facebook

Shawn Wilsie

let it be known here I have requested my membership be terminated in a popular watch group. While there are many, MANY great people as members I have a personal issue with the tone the board has taken lately. Watch collecting (or coins, or anything) should be open to all people based on sex or age without fear that a...ny content they read on a message board will be offensive to them.

These are copied from Betterskills blog.

A typical response to Wilsie’s announcement:

I wonder what public forum of 20,000 plus members Shawn plans to be a part of and not risk seeing something that is subjectively offensive to him. I wonder how Shawn plans to go through life not risking seeing something that might be offensive to him. Since I’m not a member of facebook (sorry, Tim) I guess I’ll never be able to ask him since he has picked up all of his toys and gone home in a huff.

While I know Shawn wasn’t directing his dismay with anything that I have posted, I feel that he has publicly painted the users of this forum as either ignorant rednecks, or enablers of that type of behavior. I wouldn’t care to hear such sentiments from anyone and am particularly bothered to hear them from Shawn. He isn’t the man I thought he was.

I hope that Shawn is able to get a grip in the future and get over this childish gesture. If his public ranting about this forum continues on SNBC I hope someone will post about it cause I wont be watching his shows.

SNBC host SWILSIE once again rips WG.net on Facebook (read Jim's response)

My last words on the subject

Back about 5 years or so ago I used to listen to a radio show hosted by these two guys "Opie and Anthony". They were a comedy show along the lines of Howard Stern, Mancow and that type. Thier particular brand of "no holds barred" comedy meant nobody and no subject was off topic, everything should be "fair game" to their humor.

Then one day the wife of a host they used to be in competition with died suddenly in a car accident. I'm talking about Fredia, wife of "Don Geronimo" (Mike Source in real life) and it started a serious conversation. "O&A" used to be at war with the "Don and Mike show" and many on the "O&A message board" users, and callers, took the hosts to task for not making jokes about her sudden death. The callers insisted "everything is fair game and should be made fun of, you always said so"! The hosts, and comedian Jim Norton, held firm in the belief (as did Howard Stern btw) that after all there are some things that are not funny and you should not under any circumstances make jokes about. Everyone has their line and, in this case, this was theirs.

I'm not saying what my line was, but WG crossed it. If you want to be a member and participate I hold no ill will. Go for it. I just can't endorse them anymore.

I have spoken my LAST WORD on the subject. We need to all move on from this.

Thank you all. I can't express enough how your support has meant so much to me.

Is it me or did he just make the point that Opie and Anthony, and Howard Stern, have more class than the good folks at WatchGeeks?

Best of luck to you, Shawn. It isn't often that a tv presenter will burn bridges with the folks that frequent his programs.

I know that its been said by people who ACTUALLY KNOW SEAN that he has an off-color sense of humor etc... but I find that hard to believe! I have a 9yr old son who I let be a member here. What could he have possibly seen or had said to him thats so atrocious yet NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE HECK IT IS!!!! Cmon. Well like he said WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO OUR OWN OPINION AND MY OPINION OF HIM HAS GONE DOWN. Just like he said he cant endorse WGs no more, well I cant watch his shows, buy anything from his shows or recommend to ANY of my friends and family to watch him anymore either. Im not angry at all just my HONEST OPINION about the situation.

And if your gonna make such a big deal of something, AT LEAST SAY WHAT IT IS!!! Otherwise dont talk about it. Your so outraged you cant tell anyone why? Makes me wonder just what was said and if it was even a big deal.

Maybe it was calling pictures I took of my watches as "porn"
Sadly I have lost a lot of respect for the man not because he left but because of how he left.

Here is an excerpt from a recent response I made to this topic on another thread yesterday.............

Especially now while there seems to be a line drawn in the sand, and a handful of WG feel the need to choose one side over the other on this issue... even though there are no sides.. WG ownership/staff has done absolutely nothing wrong.

Someone was upset about a MEMBER'S commentary, but did not notify us. They chose to be vague so that we could not figure it out. They took the overly dramatic route, played the martyr, and are enjoying the attention from it.

We believe through research to have discovered the offending post and eliminated it (as we would have anyway), but yet receive no credit for trying to help the situation.

As you can tell, this bothers me on many levels, especially on a personal level. A PM or email, or phone call would have kept this from being an issue at all, but that was not the route chosen.

WG will continue on as it always has, with no changes to our structure or rules. We have a wonderful community filled with terrific people, and we will not let one person sour or poison that, no matter what their motivations truly are.

JS
"WG ownership/staff has done absolutely nothing wrong."
Of course not Jim, it's always someone elses fault. You chaps run a perfect forum without bias.

"I feel that he has publicly painted the users of this forum as either ignorant rednecks, or enablers of that type of behavior."
BINGO!! Not all, but many of the most active crusaders.

Some may say he's being too sensetive, I don't think so. Shawn seems to be an upstanding guy with a strong sense of right and wrong. Apparently there is something about watch geeks that he can't reconcile with that sense. It's speaks volumes about your character when your own co-workers dump you knowing bussiness might be affected.

Everybody, or at least most wake up at some point and realize what WG's is all about.I for one have long hoped that they would fix their issues but now realize that this is impossible with current ownership. It's too far gone. They need to wipe the slate clean.

Good luck Mr. Wilsie. Image

Now if Shawn was just a joe-blow regular member I could see possibly not going the extra mile to see what the specific concern was. But when a co-worker, friend, and member all in one get's blown off like this, that's just wrong. No wonder everyone thinks Skelton's a douchebag. Once again JS you have shown your true colors. If you didn't own the forum, I'm sure you'd be banned from WG's as well by now.

Shawn was on with uber-troll Davis. He was very off his game no doubt because Boxcar Davis was still fuming about Shawn’s announcement that he was leaving WG because the content wasn’t family friendly. Wilsie even scolded a caller telling him to keep it family friendly, then realized he used the same words as the reason for leaving watchgeeks. There is even a thread on the incident at bunny forum.

Of course there is a thread about it. It was a set up from the moment the caller dialed the phone. You are aware there are a certain amount of callers that seems to be on about every other show. There is a core group of about 15 or so that is on the list and when they or should I say when they are told to call they get through without a problem because of, well lets just say they are not random comments at all but vaguely scripted calls set up in advance by Skelton and Davis. It was discussed for about an hour once on WG’s before it the thread deleted and certain posters banned for the topic of discussion."

For sure, no normal WIS owns 30+ Invictas as his/her only brand and claim to have a collection, IMHO :pirat:

This thread at geeks just goes to show that no matter how nice a guy you may be, there will be trolls piling on for no reason other than to be trolls.

I saw him on watch time and he was a happy camper. Made a comment about a sapphire crystal being almost unbreakalbe and the top of the line. Added not like some other types that claim to be better.
