Another way to look at this is that this might be the tip of the iceberg.

Being in retail, the so-called retail apocalypse is speeding up. Apart from the very highest end retail (Rolex, Patek) and the very low end (cheap Chinese smartwartches and $30 Casios) the mid-range brands, viz, anything under a hundred bucks and over five to ten grand, is in deep shit.

The luxury market is the canary in the coalmine. Like residential real estate and condos, luxury is the first to die in retail. Those who can afford, say, a Rolex Submariner or a Patek Calatrava, will do OK, because they always do. Those who need a good time-telling watch but have little to no income can buy a cheap Chinese smartwatch or a Casio non-Gee.

With the advance of AI, there are a whole shitload of younger white collar workers who might have bought, say, a Hamilton Field Khaki or a Steinhart or, well, a Fossil (or Zodiac.)

Woe is us.

Everything is on the phone according to my one son but the other has started wearing a watch because no phones or smart devices are allowed where he works. From janitorial to ceo all devices must be locked in your locker before entering the main building.

Now on to fossil it was a cheap way to enter the world of watches being affordable and half way decent for the price. A step above Kmart or Walmart and below many low end offerings from Seiko or Citizen. Most started at under 50 and ranged up to 150 years ago. Now they are starting at 100 and up and it’s not just them but across the board every company wants more money for basically the same offerings. I think this is only the tip of the iceberg and a great opportunity to sit back and watch it happen.

They have holdings in multiple resources. They have Fossil Zodiac and a few others along with STP/STC movements. Plus they have a very large number of licensed watches that the make.

The quartz revolution almost killed the industry and smart phones and devices are closing in. Plus I think people have had enough of the absurdity in price points. Would I buy a 100-300 fashion watch probably not but if it would be 50-150 for shits and giggles probably.

A couple of years ago, I noticed my nephew was wearing a Rolex Explorer. To give him the opportunity to show off the watch, I asked him what time it was. He pulled out his cellphone and read the time from it.

so sad.

In yet another example of millennials fucking things up, apparently it's now a thing to wear a watch that isn't running. This might be worth another thread.

Reading this hurts my eyes and sensibilities - and I can not stop a question repeating over and over in my head: “WHAT.THE.ACTUAL.FUCK!!?”

I just watched a British who-done-it show starring one of the 7 British actors their industry uses, who was previously known as Inspector Lewis. One of the young characters wore a vintage watch… “but it didn’t work, he just thought it was cool.”

If this is a pop culture phenomenon then let’s hope it passes faster than young dummies tucking in just the front of their sweater.
