Review: Glycine Combat Sub 39

Post by koimaster » June 23rd 2022, 2:13pm

Many of you will be familiar with the Glycine Combat Sub range. But this year, they launched a 39mm version and I’ve been fortunate enough to get my hands on one.

This latest version of the Glycine Combat Sub has a lot to offer and I’m excited to share my experience with this enticing timepiece.

Let’s dive into it.
The brand

In general, Glycine is an enthusiast’s brand. However, since I’ve spotted quite a few of them in the wild, I assume it’s more common than you’d think.

When I worked in retail and spotted someone wearing a watch, I enjoyed chit-chatting about horology with them.

This brand has a long history and a number of merits to its name. They created one of the early regular production automatic winding systems in the 1930s. The Airman was a favorite of American pilots in Vietnam, often bought at army post exchanges (PX).

While Glycine is no longer a family-owned independent brand, they’ve remained remarkably their own thing. They’re probably the most thoughtful brand in their price range when it comes to sizes.

Aren't the Lalos a family anymore?

The author apparently forgot to include Glycine's current ownership, the Invicta Watch Company of America. See the following link which primarily focuses on Lalo and the iMedia Brands company of which Lalo is the Vice Chairman of the Board. The link does provide some interesting IWCA structure, sales figures, and Lalo biographical and net worth information. iMB is apparently not affiliated with IWCA, but does market the IWCA brands.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to get my hands on one”?
Are you kidding me? Is there a list? A lottery? Am I to believe this is akin to the Tiffany’s AP? Can not any mook with with a Valu-Payz card not procure one for half the suggested retail price?
39mm? My Bolt Zeus shits parts bigger than that.

For those like bronze, someone at watchfreeks posted this link to slop. $299 for bronze combat sub. On a side note slop is not carried by dish network anymore. Tb would be devastated not accidentally finding it every time he channel surfed.

The dial is marked Swiss — typo in the description or the truth inadvertently revealed?

I'm leaning towards the former..

Probably so — I reckon with Invicta —and slop in general — it's just a typesetting, so to speak, reflex.
