Who the Fuck Collects Gees?

Post by conjurer » June 30th 2016, 10:25pm

Serious question here. Do we have any hard-core Casio Gee collectors?

I have one--the Rangeman, in which Casio finally did the right thing and combined the best features of the G-Shock and Pathfinder lines together. It's a fine watch--I've cracked the shit out of it on doorjambs (because it's pretty big) and it's not suffered at all. I have a couple of nits to pick--the atomic timekeeping is twitchy and unless I leave it facing out a window it won't pick up the signal from Colorado (I live in the PacNW.) Also, without picking up the radio signal, it's not particularly accurate--which is surprising in a watch with no moving parts. Also, the resin strap isn't very comfy. On the other hand, it's an ABC watch with a shitload of functions, is accurate enough (even without the radio time signal), and is, in the words of the Watch Commander, undestructable.

Back to the question: I have one, I think it's the tits, and wouldn't part with it. I think every WIS who is ambulatory and does anything at all outdoors should have one. However, I liken it to my chef's knife--I have a prefectly good Wusthof knife--the one I cut the tip of my thumb off with--and although it's not made with carbon steel or cost triple figures it works fine. It cuts great, holds an edge, sharpens easily, and I don't need anything else apart from a small paring knife. However, I see tons of guys who collect a million Gees, some of them very expensive limited editions, JDM only, blah blah blah.

So, does anybody need more than one Gee?

Discuss.
I find tv watches to be like the guys who raise their truck you need a fricken ladder to get in. It’s a attempt to look cool... that’s all.

I have one that I have been unsuccessful at giving away over on the late Watchforums site. To me, the gees are like flight helmets; you really don't need more than one, and if you have more than one, they just take up space that might otherwise be taken up by a supermodel's head as she gives me the blau jab to end all blaus jabs. Woof.

Discuss some more.

Bought one for my son which I killed trying to reset the time and with a subsequent foiled battery change attempt to reset. Replaced it with another identical one, new.

Otherwise I think I bought one and sold it before ever wearing it.

Have owned a couple of the Casio $30 plastic watches that I did enjoy for doing yard work. Tough little suckers; but, gave them away.

Just this one Pathfinder. Use it for hiking.

I have one, that for some reason they call aviator. Anyway, the compass and thermometer are cool, though I never use 'em. Wish it was solar, as I do not look forward to replacing the two 395 batteries it uses. I would like to eventually get a G-steel, which is solar, and I think looks better than the plastic models.
We called another exterminator to take care of the rat problem in the basement. This one hasn't come out either.

For some folk it's like Swatch collecting back in the 80's - they've just gotta have the next edition. Me? I've got one - GW 3000B Aviator bought used on the Bay for $60 - and unlike conjuror's experience, this solar atomic keeps the most accurate time of any of my atomic clocks. I use it to set all my other watches. Kind of a big ugly sumbitch though, wouldn't want another. I leave it on top of my dresser facing a window about 5 feet away - seems to keep it charged nicely.

I like the idea of them more than the reality. The Giez is the only one I ever bonded with. Now they have put a compass in the Frogman I might have a look at that though.

My feelings exactly. I know some construction guys love them, but I never did. I wear a Seiko 5, and most guys wear random, inexpensive quartz.

A trio of mine. I have 7 of them. Great for out doors of just casual wear. Cheap enough to replace.
