As someone who’s loved watches for as long as I can remember, understanding how Digital watches keep time is something that’s always intrigued me. I think, of all the watch variations out there, the inner workings of digital watches are by far the most mystifying. Let’s take a minute to go through the basics of how a digital watch keeps time.

I find quartz more exotic and enigmatic than mechanical, as I understand basic mechanical physics pretty well but micro-electronics are baffling and mysterious to me. Pretty sure quantum mechanics are involved somehow as well. It's amazingly cool that we've mastered electronics and atomic scale processes to measure time with almost perfect accuracy.
