Watchturbation.

Post by Lost » April 6th 2018, 6:17am

So for shits and giggles, and a reason to spend some of the $515 bucks I pulled out of the casino playing Mississippi stud, I bought a Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. I had an $80 dollar credit at best buy I had to burn up, and sort of WTF, why not.
I freaking love my Orient Polaris, and have worn it every day since I bought it a year and a half ago. Feel like I'm cheating on it. (I did just buy a neat alligator leather band for it.... the original strap has seen better days)

Then I found out all the crap you can do on this thing, and it really is quite amazing. I can make an almost exact duplicate of the Polaris on the Samsung using the watchmaker app. Interesting stuff.

It's like a Stepford watch! A Westworld watch!

Should keep my interest for at least 2 weeks.

I'll keep the Polaris wound...

Not into smart watches but watched the video and a couple of others and that is actually pretty cool - especially for tech nerds.

Some of the downloads did a decent job of making the smart watch look like a classic timepiece - at least the face.

Some nice examples here

After poking around - I'm find out nerds are fucking downloading cartoon Rolex and Omega faces to wear on their "smart" watches? And JLC? And Tag Heuer, even?

Fauntleroys. Same a buying a replica in my book.
WatchGeeks will go down in watch forum history as the worst watch related site that existed. Trolls, threats, bannings, and owners and sponsors talking out of their collective asses to fleece people out of hard earned money. - Koimaster

Except you can not answer a phone on a Rolex.

No one is going to mistake the Samsung for a Rolex, it is more fake than a fake. Like a toupee with a chin strap. I did download a Rolex face, it looks pretty cool at night, and has great lume!

And subject to copyright and trade dress laws. Some companies might allow such things as a form of free advertising but they do have the option of making someone's life complicated.

I'd trust Samsung to have gotten permission for the included "faces" but I'd be surprised if the third party guys bothered to check. The included faces with Apple and Samsung don't appear to be infringing anyone's design but I may have just missed some. I didn't see any that looked like the Ventura so your good work continues.

I think most of the faces are for the most part made by hobbyists. Samsung certainly is not making the faces, they equip it with a few generic faces that are not copies of anything that I know of. It is the hobbyists on the link I posted above that are creating their own and sharing them for free. So no one is selling trademarked images(at least that I have seen). There are 40,000 faces on the site. I started designing my own too, but so far it is much suck.

This just popped up on the feed: UPDATED COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

WatchMaker was contacted by the Fossil Group's attorneys. They demanded the removal of all posts, images, files etc. from the WatchMaker App, WatchMaker G+ Communities and http://getwatchmaker.com. Below is the updated list of banned watches. It can also be found in the Community Information Section at the top of the community.

Why don't they purchase a proper watch?

Do you have to ask?

I'll be first to admit that it is not the same as wearing a "real" watch. In fact, it probably is a whole 'nuther category. But it is neat non the less. It is more a techy thing. For instance, one of my favorite face's so far, the UTC hand was not working properly. I opened up the face in the editor, and found the expression for the utc hand (pointer at the end of the hand had to have same correction) needed to be set to +240 degrees instead of the +180* that the author of the face had it set for. https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities ... ines.watch
it is one of my favorite watch faces so far. With the correction factor of the UTC hand, it is perfect.
