This or That? Breitling Edition

Post by jason_recliner » February 28th 2024, 1:01am

These sort of "what should I buy" / "help me decide how to spend my money" / "tell me what watch I should like" threads are a hit around these parts and it's been a while between drinks so here we go!

I've been working out and the last few good have been good to me and I'm a bogan so I want a big heavy shiny watch on a bracelet that tells strangers I'm boss and also pretty hard. I want a Breitling. I love the Colt, always wanted an all-brushed watch:

Image

Only concern is the Colt isn't shiny and so might not look money to the uninitiated. Also indices don't have polished metal borders. And it could be a bit small now my arms and wrist are big. So...

Would you get a Superocean Steelfish?

Image

2,000m hunk of surgical/aerospace-grade stainless steel badness. Love the applied B badge. Big enough that it will stand out even on my big arms. Red AUTOMATIC and seconds hand are too cool. Enough shiny bits that even a woman can tell it's expensive. Circular-grooved dial is groovy. Badass. ICONIC.

Or would you get an Avenger Seawolf?

Image

Fuck your puny 2,000m WR, this badboy gives you the full 3,000m. You can shower and even go in a sauna with this thing, no worries. Love the applied B badge. Knurled crown is manly as fuck, I will get hairs on my chest if I wear this thing, I just know it. Big enough that it will stand out even on my big arms. Red AUTOMATIC and seconds hand are too cool. But does it have enough shiny bits? Arabics might be a bit more 'operator' than 'analyst' - I don't have any tatts and I don't have a ute or jet ski. Dial is a bit flat, not groovy. Even though it goes deeper it probably doesn't look as expensive. Badass. But probably not iconic.

I would prefer a quartz but they don't do any new ones and the older ones aren't quite as cool perhaps but there is this:

https://www.chrono24.com.au/breitling/b ... 450787.htm

https://www.chrono24.com.au/breitling/c ... 356630.htm

Only 500m and 41mm but still nice and tall and shiny and got the other good bits like applied logo and red details. Not sure if shadow Arabics completely work and I get the feeling lume is poor.

I kind of feel like a Bretiling should be a chrono but don't want to fuck around dealing with maintaining a mechanical chrono and they don't do any recent cool chronos in quartz, so I would like this:

https://www.chrono24.com.au/breitling/b ... 197064.htm

Aesthetically it's perfect and guys down at the local will worship me but yeah, don't want to be setting the time and don't want to be paying my watchmaker to service it.

So it's probably a choice between Seawolf and Steelfish (even the names are incredible - other brands suck bags of dicks), and I'll just not bother setting it. Unless the esteemed Lords can suggest anything even more awesome that is quartz and ticks all the other boxes?

My SupeOcean is about 25 years old and Im still not tired of it. It does wear smaller than its size for me. I would consider the Avenger because of the dial and its size for your meaty wrists if true.
Try both on if you can or purchase with return rights.

Lots of bling bling, polished not brushed doesnt show up on pic, . Imposing on wrist.

SuperOcean is definitely the most awesome name, maybe ever, could be a superhero or Pokemon move or even a laundry powder. Would be SO sweet to see it on the dial. 2,000m is probably enough, I'll just take it off before I body surf. Artman, that is BOSS, pretty much spot on except I want the gen before that, with the screws and tabs on the bezel. But yeah, wow, I'd have to buy a Ranger Wildtrak or Raptor so I could rest my elbow on the sill crusing down Beaufort St. FUCK YEAH.

Not a fan of the Navi, too refined/classy.

ARTMAN - Beautiful, maybe the nicest newer version Ive seen.

That model Navitimer is probably the one that got me back into watches many years ago.

For showing off ill stick with my submariner.lol
Biggest mistake of my watch collecting career when I turned down a Submariner for $1,800 for a champaign dialed gold and silver datejust for $2,100 thinking I could pick up the Sub at a later date. Course it was 1988 and the Japanese hadnt run the prices up yet.

So, will it be a Breitling shiny or will you go after a Fears? I think either one would be a winner in your collection but the Breitling has way more name recognition and way more heft on the wrist.

You've got me checking out the Breitlings more and the Tudor Black Bays less these past few days but it'll be the preowned route for me either way.

Definitely a B-ling. Suits my life much better, I rarely dress up any more, haven't been to see a show in a decde or more (excluding plays for kids!). The Milus is dressy enough for me these days. There's another contender now:

Avenger M1. Not shiny but Ti quartz chrono ticks a lot of boxes, looks badass, I love it.

Anyway, heaps of time to think, no hurry. I've got a couple of holidays this year to pay off first, then possibly some house stuff. They're really expensive currently, hopefully some better-priced examples hit the market at some point.

Thanks for your input everyone. Very helpful, made up my mind... and I'm doing the yard. Sorry, just can't bring myself to buy, especially with our dollar in the tank. I swear the more money I make, the tighter I get. Or is it the older I get the tighter I get??? Anyway, thanks and sorry again!
