New Seiko Diver

I have to say, this one makes me nurse a semi.
I am going to guess it is disappointing. In the pictures it looks like the indices have the dreaded/reviled blob lume identifiable by high relief and shiny appearance.
Nice looking watch, Mr. 'heimer!WISenheimer wrote: ↑November 28th 2024, 4:48pmI am going to guess it is disappointing. In the pictures it looks like the indices have the dreaded/reviled blob lume identifiable by high relief and shiny appearance.
This started showing up on Seiko midrange divers around the time they moved on from 6R15 movement to 6R35 and now 6R55.
My SBDC171/SPB313 has this and knowing nothing of the issue, I was immediately struck by how poor the lume was for a Seiko diver or really just any diver.
To be fair, it is quite long lasting, just not very bright.
Google Seiko blob lume and you will get lots of chatter about this.
I otherwise quite like my slim turtle, so I will keep it. But I won’t be buying any more with this type of lume.
Recently acquired a SBDC053, a 62MAS style model with 6R15 movement and it has the bright burning lume that us Seikoboys have come to expect.

The bezel insert is a thing of beauty on this one. Some people object to the hour hand but I am fine with it.

Seems like their first midrange diver in some years that isn’t a reissue or reimagining.conjurer wrote: ↑November 28th 2024, 6:12pmNice looking watch, Mr. 'heimer!WISenheimer wrote: ↑November 28th 2024, 4:48pmI am going to guess it is disappointing. I have the same sort of lume on my SPB381 GMT. It starts bright, then loses power quickly. It does hold on to a low glow all night. I certainly miss the light-your-cigarette lume on the old Monster or 007.
This new one really has the hooks in me. I haven't sported this kind of wood for a Seiko diver since the SPB381, and before that, the crazy-ass Transocean.
That is good to hear.jason_recliner wrote: ↑November 29th 2024, 2:12pmIt's nice enough if you're looking for a diver that looks fancy, like you wouldn't ever dive with it. Which seems to be what most people are looking for.
Glossy blobby lume on my King Turtle is nuclear, BTW.
Yeah I noticed on review that these were 300m. Pretty cool by itself and even more so given 12.5mm case thickness.
This was an economic consideration related to ISO IIRC i.e. it cost more and took more time to test each watch to 360m than 250m. I can recall more at least one person testing a 200m-rated SKX007 to 700+m.WISenheimer wrote: ↑November 29th 2024, 8:38pmYeah I noticed on review that these were 300m. These are starting to grow on me in a way the Transocean never did.
