On The Way: Seiko SBPK001/SFK003

Post by WIStful » May 4th 2024, 2:28pm

Closed the deal with Jihousha in Japan for < 500 USD shipped.

Special thank you to conjurer fior the GMT Shootout thread that led me to stumbling across this piece.

Seems like this will wrap up my 2024 Buyathon as it fills a lot of blanks. Green, GMT and a true one, quartz accuracy with solar power, dive bezel and presumed ruggedness.

Planning a late summer cruise from Sitka AK to Victoria BC with a buddy, this will be on my wrist for that. Ideally, on a dark teal to aquamarine strap made of material suitable for a marine environment.

I am calling this the BGTM, Big Green Timing Machine, in light of its various properties.

The 2024 Sellathon now beginning is likely to include Geckota Frost Sea Scout, Seiko SRPE60, and Citizen NB1060. Feel free to contact me, I will pass on savings from avoiding eBay.

I have come to the conclusion that affordables for the masses is Seiko at its best. Been increasingly jaded with the brand as the went uptown and upscale internationally.

Zaratsu polishing and spring drive goes only so far with me.

If I am ever back in the chips enough to be throwing down 4-5 digits on a watch, it will be Rolex, Omega etc.

Seems like Seiko may be getting same message judging by their more recent affordable stuff. Even the Seiko 5 stuff is looking nicer than it used to.

Lets see if they ever do an affordable spring drive. They have been reserving this as a pillar of their mojo for the upper end but no reason that they couldnt make this as common and cheap as their kinetic movements.

Conjurer added some info about a couple of recent mech gmt Seiko divers and while researching, the Internet suggested I take a look at the solar gmt sumo. So I opened a review video and when the reviewer set the hour hand , true GMT, I almost fell out of my chair, instantly sold so long as I could round one up for <500 USD shipped, which was doable by a few dollars.

Like Toyota. My LS430 was super nice, no doubt, but Corollas/Tacomas are category killers

So good to see Seiko doing a quartz Sumo, even if I'm not a fan of the colours they've chosen. Would be great if the big brands offered quartz and even touch-screen GPS versions of their best designs instead of focusing on fairly useless mechanicals. Omega used to offer a quartz SMP, for example - bring it back.

Yeah, me too. Loved my GS but don't want to worry about getting a hairline on a perfectly flat mirror-polished surface these days. Partly why I love my King turtle and Dan Henry so much. Very nice dials and handsets inside cases that look like they haven't been finished. I've been body surfing with both countless times now and can't tell the difference from when they were brand new.
