15,000 Dogs Slaughtered for Chinese Food Festival

Post by koimaster » August 4th 2011, 9:59am

Yulin, China hosted a food festival a few weeks ago, and more than 15,000 dogs ended up on the menu.

Having earned a reputation for serving some of the most delicious dog dishes in the world, the festival drew sizable crowds as dog meat connoisseurs from near and far descended on the city to participate in festivities.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Local Lu Hin said “It is just like other meat. Smaller animals tend to be more delicate and sweeter while very big dogs have a strong, muscular taste. We proved that when we started the festival a few years ago and everybody accepts that the best dog meat dishes come from Yulin. That was why we created the festival and the number of visitors we get is a testimony to the fact that everybody recognizes how good the dog meat is from the region.”

Consumption of dog meat is still a widely accepted practice in Guangdong province, home to a number of dog farms, where pups are often slaughtered in their first three to four months of life. Opponents of the dog meat trade are turning up the heat, however: due for legislative consideration in the spring is a proposed law that would outlaw animal cruelty, including the practice of beating dogs to death in order to enhance their flavor.

It's not like people have Cows, Chickens, Hogs as pets. These people eat domesticated animals. Why don't they just eat each other why they are at it? It turns my stomach seriously. If I saw someone killing a dog to eat it, I guarantee no one would see that person again. People would be like "I just saw Ping Pong the other day"

------------------

Sure they do.

Pet cows

Pet chickens

Pet pigs

...and not all pet pigs are potbellied.

If many people actually saw the way any animal is slaughtered it would be stomach turning. Cow,pig, duck, you name it.
Future participation in this thread should be limited to vegetarians only. The rest of us should just STFU and fire up the grill.

Here chicky,chicky......

With all due respect, you are grossly misinformed;
As a kid I had chickens and rabbits as pets.
Later on when I lived on a 55 acre olive and orange orchard, I had a 200 lb. Hampshire Hog as a house pet. I bought her on a lark as a piglet at a live stock auction in Marysville, CA. I took her everywhere with me until she was too big to lift into my pick up.

Lived in the house with me. She was a LOT smarter than many dogs I've known too.
Came when called. Always stayed in sight. Perfectly housebroken and could open the doorknob herself to get out whenever she needed/wanted.

When life's circumstances necessitated my having to give her up, I found her a home where she was able to live out her years in comfort.

Never had a cow as a pet but my life isn't over yet. You just never know?

BTW, I still eat pork.

TRU-LYE wrote:Is this really any different than slaughtering cows, chickens, pigs, etc..? Different cultures eat different things i'm sure in India they think we're wrong for eating the "sacred" cow.

No. You are correct, sir.

But it is an Abomination Before God to eat a Pug.

Remember, god is dog spelled backwards.

Well, it is a watch forum so I suppose comparisons between China and Switzerland are inevitable. I won't fight the tide:

Switzerland

Popular Swiss recipes for dog meat include gedörrtes Hundefleisch served as paper-thin slices, as well as smoked dog ham, Hundeschinken, which is prepared by salting and drying raw dog meat.

According to the 21 November 1996 edition of the Rheintaler Bote, a Swiss newspaper covering the Rhine Valley area, the rural Swiss cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen are known to have had a tradition of eating dogs, curing dog meat into jerky and sausages, as well as using the lard for medicinal purposes. Dog sausage and smoked dog jerky remains a staple in the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell, where one farmer was quoted in a regional weekly newspaper as saying that "meat from dogs is the healthiest of all. It has shorter fibres than cow meat, has no hormones like veal, no antibiotics like pork."

In fact, based on Asia SPCA, the per capita consumption of dog in China is low. Perhaps even lower than Switzerland.

China

Royal SPCA Asian regional representative Paul Littlefair estimates from direct observations and news reports that from six to eight million dogs per year are eaten in CHINA--a low total for a species consumed primarily for meat value, but a number that would be consistent with the perception of dog-eating as an occasional vice mostly engaged in by older men. The extent of dog eating in China appears to vary by region, appearing to be most prevalent in Guangdong, the neighboring southern provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi, and in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces, adjoining North Korea. Commercial dog meat ranching is known to occur in Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Hebei provinces.

Hey! SlowPo! You're pretty good with finding intertubz images - how about you find me a "Fuck Switzerland" signature? I'll buy you a beer.

Hopefully, you'll find this easier to digest, if you will.

Christ on a pogo stick - it was only 3 sentences only 2 of which were directed to you with the remaining one to SlowPo. The balance consisted of quotes. You do know there are treatments for the disorder, right? Allow me to summarize for the back of the class: the Swiss eat dogs.

Onward to the next...

If your soliciting personal opinion, the former.

Normal varies. Though I do have to confess that I find the arrogance associated with a cultural holier-than-thou attitude to be immensely entertaining.

Sadly misinformed but entertaining nonetheless.

In the interest of disclosure: I abhor the practice of consuming dog - more because of the inhumane method of slaughter. But if you really want to help out the dogs - start with Viet Nam and South Korea. Then move on to China then Switzerland.

A little education or research can go a long way.
