Yulin, China hosted a food festival a few weeks ago, and more than 15,000 dogs ended up on the menu.

Having earned a reputation for serving some of the most delicious dog dishes in the world, the festival drew sizable crowds as dog meat connoisseurs from near and far descended on the city to participate in festivities.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Local Lu Hin said “It is just like other meat. Smaller animals tend to be more delicate and sweeter while very big dogs have a strong, muscular taste. We proved that when we started the festival a few years ago and everybody accepts that the best dog meat dishes come from Yulin. That was why we created the festival and the number of visitors we get is a testimony to the fact that everybody recognizes how good the dog meat is from the region.”

Consumption of dog meat is still a widely accepted practice in Guangdong province, home to a number of dog farms, where pups are often slaughtered in their first three to four months of life. Opponents of the dog meat trade are turning up the heat, however: due for legislative consideration in the spring is a proposed law that would outlaw animal cruelty, including the practice of beating dogs to death in order to enhance their flavor.

Is this really any different than slaughtering cows, chickens, pigs, etc..? Different cultures eat different things i'm sure in India they think we're wrong for eating the "sacred" cow.

I know it is a cultural thing, but this bothers me more than counterfeit crowns, as there is a 30,000 year symbiotic relationship between human and dog. In this case it looks like a “yen” for delicacys rather than a dire need for protein.

It's not like people have Cows, Chickens, Hogs as pets. These people eat domesticated animals. Why don't they just eat each other why they are at it? It turns my stomach seriously. If I saw someone killing a dog to eat it, I guarantee no one would see that person again. People would be like "I just saw Ping Pong the other day"

If many people actually saw the way any animal is slaughtered it would be stomach turning. Cow,pig,duck, you name it.

As a kid I had chickens and rabbits as pets.
Later on when I lived on a 55 acre olive and orange orchard, I had a 200 lb. Hampshire Hog as a house pet. I bought her on a lark as a piglet at a live stock auction in Marysville, CA. I took her everywhere with me until she was too big to lift into my pick up.

Lived in the house with me. She was a LOT smarter than many dogs I've known too.
Came when called. Always stayed in sight. Perfectly housebroken and could open the doorknob herself to get out whenever she needed/wanted.

When life's circumstances necessitated my having to give her up, I found her a home where she was able to live out her years in comfort.

Never had a cow as a pet but my life isn't over yet. You just never know?

BTW, I still eat pork.

In fact, based on Asia SPCA, the per capita consumption of dog in China is low. Perhaps even lower than Switzerland.

The extent of dog eating in China appears to vary by region, appearing to be most prevalent in Guangdong, the neighboring southern provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi, and in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces, adjoining North Korea. Normal varies. Though I do have to confess that I find the arrogance associated with a cultural holier-than-thou attitude to be immensely entertaining.

In the interest of disclosure: I abhor the practice of consuming dog - more because of the inhumane method of slaughter. But if you really want to help out the dogs - start with Viet Nam and South Korea. Then move on to China then Switzerland.

A little education or research can go a long way.

Hawk...I don't care if you like to eat dog...or just condone it. If I were to see someone slaughter...cook or eat dog...it is one of the very few reasons I would be willing to go back to prison to stop.
