While Matteo says his most direct inspiration came from Perriand's table designed in the 1950s, he's playing with some design elements familiar to watches.
Here's that Perriand table for comparison:

I guess the high cost of this watch is due to casting and machining costs of that case. And it's very shiny, lots of polished metal there. Chunky, too. More jewelry than watch, in my opinion.
